Get Your Chocolate...On!

Let’s talk Chocolate! I love chocolate! Sometimes I crave chocolate! Just about everyone loves chocolate! It is the known as the food of the gods. The Aztecs used cacao beans as currency rather than gold. Lovers gift each other chocolate. It is an aphrodisiac. The thing is that the mass produced chocolate we all have grown up with has tons of sugar and preservatives and loses the healing properties that real chocolate has! What to do??

Some things you may (or may not) know about chocolate. Real chocolate is cacao. Chocolate is made from cacao beans. That’s it! No dairy. No sugar. NO chemicals or preservatives. Just cacao. The health benefits of raw chocolate are many!

  1. Supports a healthy cardiovascular system

  2. Highest concentration of antioxidants of any food, which protects our DNA from damage

  3. Best source of Magnesium, which supports the heart, increases brain function, relaxes muscles and menstrual cramping, builds strong bones, promotes healthy bowel movements and increases alkalinity in the body

  4. High in Iron, which keeps our blood healthy

  5. Excellent source  of Zinc, which supports a healthy immune system, pancreas, liver, skin & sexual fluids

These are just a handful of the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids that are contained in raw chocolate. When cooked/processed the majority of the healing compounds in chocolate become damaged and some, like the Omega 6 fatty acids, become a transfat and rancid. When any essential fatty acid or oil becomes rancid it causes inflammation in the body, defeating their healing purpose.

The healing benefits of raw chocolate are abundant; natural happiness inducing chemicals, weight-loss promoting and vitamin and mineral rich! But only if it is raw. Unadulterated. Unprocessed.

Look for the following:

  • raw chocolate bars

  • raw cacao nibs

  • raw cacao powder

There are other raw chocolate products you can look for but these are the easiest to find and easiest to use. You can find them at your local health food store or Whole Foods or Trader Joes. Another thing to look for your raw chocolate is for it to be organic and “Fair Trade”. Fair Trade designation protects farmers and promotes higher quality and standards in your chocolate. I love to drink this ‘tea’ that has raw maca and cacao in it. It’s made by a company named “Organic Traditions” and is called Macaccino Drink Mix. It’s a healthier alternative to coffee and is very tasty. Raw cacao nibs and cacao powder can be used to make a yummy breakfast by adding it to your raw oats. It can be used for smoothies, to make raw chocolate fudge and other raw desserts.

Super Morning Smoothie

You can make the Goji Water by adding ½ cup dried goji berries to 2-3 cups of filtered room temperature water. Let this sit for 3-4 hours.

Add the ingredients to the Goji Water (you can use the berries too) in a high power blender and blend until smooth.

Remember to enjoy your chocolate raw and you will reap the healing and beautifying benefits of this delicious ‘food of the Gods’!
