Get Your Snooze ON!

We all know that good sleep is important. But good sleep isn’t always the easiest thing to achieve. Our lives are hectic and filled with many strains and responsibilities that can make it difficult for us to sleep well. Sleep provides our bodies with many health benefits, improving our mood, promoting a healthy heart and mind and even promoting a healthy weight. Our body regenerates and heals itself while we sleep which is another reason why it is über important for us to get a quality snooze! Quality sleep (at least 6 hours a night) has also been shown to reduce inflammation in the body and inflammation is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and premature aging. All the more reason to get your snooze on!

Considering I have worked crazy hours my sleep cycle isn’t as ‘ON’ as I’d like it to be but I’ve learned some tips that have helped me and can help you improve the quality of your sleep.

  1. Create a Sleep Schedule for yourself! Go to bed and wake up at the same time. Consistency reinforces your body’s natural clock.

  2. Start a Bedtime Ritual! Creating the time to relax and unwind before going to bed helps your body know that it’s bedtime. Try listening to soothing music, taking a warm bath, dim the lights and/or drink a warm cup of Chamomile tea.

  3. Avoid TV and Electronic devices! The light that these devices create can throw of your body’s internal clock. Not to mention the fact that responding to work emails can get your mind going again defeating the purpose of sleep.

  4. Mind your Food!! Don’t eat too much or too little before bed. Do your best to avoid nicotine and caffeine, which can take hours to wear off, and alcohol, which can disrupt your sleep later on the night.

  5. Create Comfort in your space and body! Wear light, breathable clothing, like cotton. Use room darkening shades. Ear plugs and a eye mask. Make sure the temperature in the room is to your liking. I live for my room darkening shades!! They make my bedroom so easy to sleep in.

I have a hard time sleeping if I’m too full or starving or too hot or cold! Sometimes I feel like Goldilocks! But with this tips I’ve trained my body to sleep well. This has greatly helped my mood and energy and has improved the quality of my waking life! Give these a try or create your own bedtime ritual to reap the benefits of consistent good quality sleep!
