Are you always tired??

I wasn’t brought up in a coffee household, which is interesting because my family is Spanish and there is nothing Spanish folks love more than their cafe con leche in the morning. But alas, I wasn’t raised to drink coffee. That didn’t change the fact that once I started working I started relying on Red Bulls… Definitely not healthy. The thing was that they didn’t have much of an effect on me but even a little pick me up was better than nothing. As the hours I kept became increasingly irregular and the hectic demands of my career made it easy to eat unhealthy, processed foods I began having a hard time falling asleep at night and my energy levels during the day was erratic. Only later did I realize that my issues were due to adrenal fatigue.

Signs of Adrenal Fatigue

  • Dependent on coffee/colas/stimulants?

  • Rely on these throughout the day to stay “on”?

  • Feel tired for no reason?

  • Take awhile for you to get going in the morning?

  • Difficult for you to bounce back from illness/stress?

  • Are your cheeks hollow?

  • Are your lips pale??

  • Are your eyes overly sensitive to bright sunlight?

  • Unexplained lower back/knee pain?

Why is it important to support your adrenals??

Overstressed adrenal glands mess with your hormones. This imbalance can disrupt the thyroid and over time can lead to insulin resistance/Type 2 Diabetes.

Nowadays due to our hectic lifestyles, the increasing demands on our time, stress and the poor quality of our food supply it is quite common for people to be experiencing some form of adrenal fatigue. The fact that the average American drinks 3 cups of coffee a day and that most people eat way too much sugar and refined/processed foods make it that much more difficult for our adrenals to function properly. But there is something that you can do about it.

How it works?

Adrenalin is a hormone that is responsible for our fight or flight response which was very useful when we were in the jungles and savannahs and needed to get away from predators with the quickness but’s just not as useful. When the high from adrenalin wears off you may feel irritable, headachey, fatigued and/or confused. Which is when you reach for more coffee or something sugary.

What can you do to support your adrenals?

  1. If you consume multiple cups of coffee/caffeinated drinks throughout the day - Start by weaning yourself down to one cup a day.

  2. Swap your coffee for a Espresso - Espresso has oils that don’t affect the body like coffee and it also is processed slower by your body.

  3. Swap your coffee for Green Tea - Green tea has tons of antioxidants that not only boost your immune system but also helps lower stress. And what’s better is that Green tea increases stamina and boosts endurance!!!

  4. Swap sugar and high fructose corn syrup for Raw Honey - white sugar and high fructose corn syrup lead to blood sugar issues and obesity but raw honey has healing properties! Raw Honey helps ward off allergies, has powerful antioxidants and boosts immunity.

  5. Swap white salt for colorful salts - your adrenals need good salts. Try Himalayan sea salt or Celtic sea salt. These salts contain minerals and micronutrients that help balance your body.

  6. Eat a healthy and balanced diet filled with fresh green vegetables and colorful fruits and veggies, whole grains like brown rice and quinoa and lean grass-fed, antibiotic-free meats.

  7. Exercise Smart, not hard - your body needs exercise but going at it hard and only a few times a week does more harm than good. It creates more stress. Consistency is the key. Challenge your body, don’t destroy it in one workout.

When I went off the Red Bulls and the refined carbohydrates and sugars my life and health completely changed!! For the best! Now I handle the normal stresses in my life much better than I used to. I also have a healthier and more positive outlook on life. I am healthier and happier than I was before I made these changes and I am confident that you can do the same. Just remember to start with baby steps, be patient with yourself and don’t give up. Start with one or two of the suggestions and build from there. Rome wasn’t built in a day!
