Say No to Allergies

I’ll admit it, some days it’s harder to write than others. This post was supposed to have been written by yesterday but it is Friday morning and I am just now beginning to write. My allergies have been killing me this past week. I don’t know how it’s been for you this season but allergies can really zap your energy and make your life a pain. I could’ve popped a pill but I took a different route. I decided to listen to my body. It was telling me that I need to slow down. (Just a tad) I am always running around into this thing or into that. Always doing something. So I gave myself the space to heal my body; without medication. I followed a 5 rules, which I will outline for you:

  1. Eliminate all Dairy - dairy products produce excess mucus and can turn a simple case of allergies into a full blown sinus infection. Most people are also highly sensitive to dairy too so it is good to be mindful of how much dairy you’re consuming and how you feel.  

  2. Eat Lots of Greens & other Colorful Veggies - half my plate at lunch and dinner was green and colorful. Greens like spinach, kale, swiss chard and collards help our bodies get rid of unwanted, and unnecessary, ‘things’.

  3. Eliminate all Wheat/Gluten - gluten is a protein that is found in wheat and a few other grains. Wheat/Gluten is a powerful allergen, causing inflammation in our bodies and producing excess mucus, as a result of it being an inflammatory agent.  

  4. Drink plenty of fluids - purified water, Throat Coat tea, Echinacea Plus and Gipsy Cold Care along with my favorite Green Tea. I had these on heavy rotation to hydrate and boost my immune system.

  5. Get plenty of quality sleep - this is crucial, your body needs quality sleep to rejuvenate and heal itself.

This is what I did for the past week and I am pleased to report that aside from some sneezing and a little nasal congestion I managed my allergies. I did not get any infections!! Yay!! I proved to myself, yet again, that if I listen to my body and give it the rest and nourishment it needs, it will have my back! The more you fill your body with the nutrients, the vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals it needs to heal itself, the better your body will respond to environmental stressors, like allergens. Our bodies are truly miraculous entities completely capable of healing itself (as it has done for millennia before ‘modern medicine’). I am not saying that there aren’t times when we may need the added help of medication, there are. However, if we eat foods that are rich in nutrition our bodies will be healthier and fitter and better able to rejuvenate and heal itself without unnecessarily medicating ourselves. Health and wellbeing aren’t destinations, they are a journey and as journeys are unique to each of us. Happy Journey!

So Many Use RAW Apple Cider Vinegar

I’ve been hearing about the myriad of benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for awhile now but only recently have I started really paying attention and experimenting with it in my day to day. I have to say I really like the benefits!

Oh, before I get into it, just be sure that your Apple Cider Vinegar is RAW. Your bottle has to contain the ‘mother of the vinegar’ which is what gives the healing properties to ACV. So remember, RAW and “mother of the vinegar”. If it is clear, filtered, processed it loses its healing properties!

Back to the healing properties! Did you know you can use it to make your hair shiny, clear up acne and soothe a sunburn?? I knew the hair thing but not the other two! These are just a few of the benefits. I use it as mouthwash pre-brushing to kill off bacteria and whiten my chompers. This will loosen up any mucus in your sinuses which is awesome!! Because it helps relieve allergies and keeps sinus infections away (which I used to get several times a year!!). I sip it in purified water to keep my body’s pH balanced - this increases my energy levels and protects me from illness - and to keep my waistline trim - especially now that bikini season is upon us!   

Some Benefits of ACV?

  • Aid in weight-loss - studies have shown that the acetic acid, found in raw ACV, reduces abdominal fat, inches around your waist, weight and triglycerides (which contribute to bad cholesterol).

  • Boosts energy by balancing your body’s pH levels - when your body is too acidic (lower pH levels) it can be more prone to infections and a variety of illnesses and have low energy levels which ACV helps reverse. Raw ACV helps the body maintain a healthy alkaline environment.

How to use ACV??

You can add Raw Apple Cider Vinegar to your salads, or your salad dressing, even in your smoothies! Be sure to check out my recipe for a great fat burning drink using ACV.

  • For helping alkalinize your body, weight loss and maintenance you can add 1 tablespoon of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, before your meals.

  • For treating acute conditions like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, sore throat you can add 2 tablespoons of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, after your meals

Fat Burning & Detoxifying Drink

16 oz purified water

2 tbsp Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, organic (**make sure it is RAW and has the ‘mother of the vinegar’ in it**)

½ organic lemon, squeezed (can use 1 whole lemon)

1 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon, ground

1 tsp raw honey (optional)

Mix with a spoon and drink to your health!

Beat Spring Allergies with Raw Honey

It’s (finally!!) Springtime!! The weather is beginning to warm up and with it the trees, grasses and flowers will start to bloom. For those of us who suffer from seasonal allergies this is not the best time of year. Itchy, watery eyes. Runny nose. Congestion. Endless sneezing. You know the symptoms! I definitely know the symptoms!! Every spring (and fall), like clockwork, I would come down with a nasty case of seasonal allergies which would sometimes progress into sinus infections. Thankfully, I discovered some changes I could make to my diet and lifestyle that would be the best thing that ever happened to me.

I have always loved honey. I always chose honey over sugar when sweetening my tea. What I didn’t know is that most mass-produced honey is processed and that the healing properties have been stripped because of this. Honey is one of the world’s most healing foods. It is anti-aging. Anti-bacterial. Rich in minerals and enzymes. Honey boosts immunity! Bee produced foods are the only foods that will never spoil!!

But for you to enjoy the benefits of honey - it has to be RAW! Unfiltered. Unprocessed. Wild. Organic.

When I switched to real, raw honey it completely changed my relationship with Spring. Allergies no longer plagued me. All it took was a little raw honey in my morning smoothie or in my tea. Just let the tea be at a drinkable temperature before you add the honey. Raw honey also has B vitamins, which helps us manage stress better, helps clear up acne and helps us maintain a wrinkle-free complexion longer!

If you’re like me and exercise regularly, adding bee pollen to your diet will help increase endurance, strength, energy and speed. It also increases muscle growth and definition! When buying bee pollen, choose either fresh or bee pollen that has been dried at 96 degrees or less in order to retain all of its nutritional value. **Just be sure to start with ¼ teaspoon and build from there. You can add bee pollen to your smoothie or your morning oatmeal or any other drink. Or you can be daring and just eat your ¼ teaspoon of it straight!

Beauty Smoothie

2 ½ cups purified water/coconut water

1 cup organic blueberries, frozen

½ cup organic mango, frozen

½ cup organic strawberries, frozen

¼ cup organic goji berries, dried

1 tbsp organic raw cacao powder

½ tbsp organic honey, raw

½ tbsp bee pollen (if new to bee pollen, ¼ tsp)

**Blend and serve! This is a perfect for breakfast or pre-workout.
