Beauty has been on my mind this week. (Probably because of the workshop I'll be teaching tonight!!) Actually, beauty is always on my mind. I am one of these people that truly loves beautiful things, people, faces, flowers etc. It’s part of me. If my surroundings aren’t aesthetically pleasing I start getting creative and finding something of beauty for my eyes to focus on. Beauty, however, is a very subjective thing. And even the most genetically gifted amongst us has moments of blah-ness. It is subjective. It is societal conditioning. It is hard to identify, sometimes. It is in the ‘eye of the beholder’. But what if every time we looked in the mirror, we could find yet another thing to love about ourselves, our faces, our bodies?? How wonderful would that be?? To be so completely and utterly comfortable in who we are that our looks are just an ever-changing manifestation of what is within?? I think that would be awesome!! It certainly would take a little of the edge off! :)

Which is why part of my mission in working with my clients is empowering them to feel utterly irresistible in their own skin! Without surgery. Without pills and potions. Just as they are. And only through healing their bodies with real, whole, natural food. Food that your great grandparents would recognize as food! I had to do an exercise, as part of an attraction acting class where I was asked to take a private moment and look at my body, naked and work through whatever issues I had with my body by focusing on what I found attractive. This wasn’t easy to do. Like all women, I have moments where I feel completely unattractive. And whenever I’ve voiced this to my bestie or my honey they just say “Uh, you’re crazy!”. Well, that may be but I still feel uncomfortable in those moments when I feel ‘ugly’. This is what I’ve learned to do about it (and what I share with my clients).

  • When I find myself judging my looks - I ask myself ‘where did I get that ‘opinion’ from??’ And then I choose to release it by asking myself ‘what if I didn’t continue to adopt that opinion as my truth??’

  • When I catch myself feeling uncomfortable in my skin - I focus on one thing about myself that I love.

  • I reflect on what I’m eating - food affects our moods and some make us feel ugh, yucky...while others give us energy and improve our mood! I make improvements where needed.

  • Get Sweaty!! Exercise - duh! Yeah, I know this is a common sense one but making time for exercise can really improve our perspective on ourselves. Yesterday, my honey was feeling ugh, because of his job and I lovingly badgered him to come ‘get sweaty’ with me. After our workout he felt better and thanked me for getting him to the gym. The same can work for you!

I think 4 is good start for you guys. It’s one more suggestion than I give my clients per session but I think you can handle it! :) When working on improving our self-image it is important to be kind to ourselves, or learn to be kind. We have all been through our share of whatever life has had to offer us and we are all still standing. Wobbly or not. You are still here. Make your resilience and strength a starting point to loving yourself, unconditionally. I know you can do it!

Beautify with Açaí

I’ve been putting açaí in my smoothies and raw desserts for a couple years now and I love it!! It is a wonderful addition. What has me disturbed is that now I am seeing “acai” everywhere and in everything. The ‘issue’ with this is that these companies are using the the acai berry as a marketing tool to lure customers into purchasing and consuming these products and the acai berry is miniscule part of their product. So, I am going to share the health benefits of this amazonian berry and let you in on what to look for and where on the ingredient list it should be in order for you to receive its full benefits!

The açaí berry is a little berry that grows in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil and has been used for centuries by the native people of Brazil for its medicinal properties. It is considered to be a powerhouse for nutrients and antioxidants. It only grows in the tropical regions around the equator, in South America, which means the plant has to have high amounts of protection from the sun’s UV rays, in the form of antioxidants.

A few top health benefits of the açaí berry:

  • High levels of essential fatty acids like Omega-3,6,9 and oleic acid - all of which are great for beautifying your skin and hair

  • Highest known ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) values of any fruit or veggie - promoting longevity

  • Boosts energy levels

  • Contains 19 different amino acids - needed to build healthy proteins in the body

  • Enhances brain and nerve function

  • Rich in minerals like calcium, phosphorus and vitamins like beta-carotene and vitamin E

  • Improves the function of the immune system

  • Promotes cardiovascular health

Always look for your açaí to be:

  1. Organic - it’s pointless to eat something this powerfully healthy and rejuvenating while at the same time pumping your body with chemicals and toxins

  2. Properly Freeze-dried - when buying açaí berry powder you want it to be freeze-dried within hours of harvest in order for it to retain 30-50% of its original antioxidant levels

  3. Fair-Trade - this certification contributes to the sustainability of the rainforest communities, where the açaí berry is grown, by guaranteeing fair wages and improving the quality of life through better health-care, housing and education

  4. As much açaí berry skin as possible - the nutritional components of the berry are found in the skin

I pick up the Sambazon brand of ‘fresh’ frozen açaí berry from my local health foods store or Whole Foods, but you can also find it at Trader Joe’s. They come in little packets that you can throw into the blender to make a delicious smoothie or you can thaw them and mix it with coconut water.

When buying a ‘juice’ that contains açaí look for it to be the: 1st ingredient or one of the first 3 ingredients - as ingredients are listed in order from highest concentration to lowest. Sambazon makes an açaí berry juice where açaí is the first ingredient. This juice is very sweet because of the added agave syrup, but you can water it down (with purified water) to your liking. I water the juice down by half. (The juice contains 24 grams of sugar, per serving,  which is equal to 6 teaspoons! That’s a lot..)

Chocolate Açaí Bowl

2 packets Sambazon açaí, frozen

1 ripe banana

½ cup organic strawberries

½ cup almond milk

2 tbsp raw cacao powder

1 tbsp shredded coconut

Blend (minus the shredded coconut) until smooth in texture using a high powered blender, like a Vitamix, or a regular blender. Serve and sprinkle the shredded coconut on top. Enjoy!

If you found this post informative please feel free to share it with your friends and if you tried your hand at the Chocolate Açaí Bowl I’d love to hear about how it went!

Want to be Ageless??

Ever wonder why people can be the same age but look so different?? One just looks older. Even when I was a little girl I was curious about this phenomenon. They say that it’s just genetics and that there isn’t a thing you can do about it. But what if that isn’t the case?? What if you can turn on and off the way your genes manifest themselves? What if you could create an environment to that allows your body to heal itself?? If every, seemingly, ‘small’ action you took on a day by day basis compounded upon itself over time, what would you do different?

I know what I would do differently. That’s why I started studying diet, nutrition and holistic healing. Everything is cause and effect. Every action has a reaction. This is science. It is unavoidable. The thing is that it is easy to get so sucked up into living your life that you don’t realize the choices you are making. There is loads of conflicting information out there too! And there is simply LOADS of information out there. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to health and wellness because each and every one of us in unique.

This is why I came up with the idea of doing a 21-day anti-aging challenge! To introduce little changes, some that people aren’t aware of and others that they know but haven’t done. There is no ‘small’ choice. Every thing that we do affects our bodies and minds. Every thing we eat becomes our cells. Is what you are feeding your body and mind creating beautiful skin? or is it creating wrinkles?? Are you providing your body with the tools to fight off disease?? Are you giving your body the nourishment it needs to build strong hair and nails?? What are you building?

Every woman, and men too, want to look and feel their best! It is part of human nature. Knowledge is power and what I am going to share with you during this challenge has the power to positively impact your well-being and your life. The challenge will be done virtually. You will receive a daily email with the challenge of the day and it will be up to you to do it that day. Each daily challenge will be easy to do, fun and informative. Each daily challenge will be powerful as well! My goal is to empower my sisters in growing wiser and more confident with the passing years and to view the aging process as a joyful one! Because you can age beauty-fully! As a bonus, I will be doing complimentary Health Consults at the end of the challenge. Read more about it and take full responsibility for your beauty and wellbeing!
