Foods to Kill Candida Overgrowth

I’m of the school of “Do as I Do” so I started actively killing off the Candida in my system this week - as I was researching about what Candida overgrowth causes. I can tell you from personal experience, it isn’t a fun process. Depending on how much overgrowth of Candida you have, the symptoms of 'Candida Die-Off' can feel flu-like, bring on headaches and gastrointestinal issues..to put it mildly. I’ve been experiencing headaches, dizziness, itchiness and fatigue but there are other symptoms. I’m not telling you this to scare you from choosing to cleanse your body but to arm you with knowledge.

Cleaning up one’s diet and your body from harmful toxins and keeping our body’s flora and hormones balanced are an essential part of being healthy, avoiding illness and feeling our best!! Thankfully, there are things you can do to ease the symptoms of the Candida Die Off and to aid your liver in expelling the toxins!

Foods to Kill Candida

  1. Choose Non-Starchy Vegetables - this starves the candida of sugar (which feeds it and allows it to grow and multiply).

  2. Choose Deep Green Vegetables and Barley Grass Concentrates - these are rich in chlorophyll which supports your liver in removing toxins from your body.

  3. Eat Fresh, Organic, Antibiotic & Hormone-free Poultry - commercial poultry and livestock are fed antibiotics daily and ingesting even low levels of antibiotics can cause a proliferation of candida. Eggs, dairy and red meats have properties that promote candida growth and should be avoided for 3-4 weeks. Avoid processed meats and cold cuts too, as they are loaded with chemicals and sugar!

  4. Eat Wild Salmon, Herring, Sardines and Anchovies are loaded with healthy omega-3 fats that help heal inflammation in the body caused by candida overgrowth.

  5. Choose Non-Glutinous Grains - buckwheat, millet, quinoa and oat groats have high amounts of fiber which are excellent for keeping your digestive system moving and for removing candida toxins from your body.

  6. Eat Aduki Beans and Mung Beans are great for their fiber content and detoxifying effects and they are also among the best foods for limiting candida growth.

  7. Live Yogurt Cultures found in prebiotic, organic yogurt and kefir are essential in helping your gut repopulate the good bacteria and crowd out the candida.

Extra Credit - Avoiding/Easing Candida Die Off

You’re starting to kill of the candida overgrowth in your body and you’re not feeling so good...But now is not the time to give up! (If your symptoms are severe, you can ease up a little - but only a little!) Add these to your routine and feel better:

  • Increase your water intake to flush out the toxins faster.

  • Take an antioxidant supplement NAC with Molybdenum, 600mg, which help your body expel candida toxins and supports your liver and immune system.

  • Take a quality vitamin C supplement twice a day - I like the Synergy Company’s Pure Radiance C because it is an organic, whole-food naturally derived vitamin.

  • Slow down and rest as much as you can.

  • Drink Chicory Root coffee, Cinnamon tea, Pau d’Arco tea, Ginger tea and Licorice tea as they have anti-fungal properties and chicory root is a great prebiotic, helping repopulate your gut with healthy bacteria.

Don’t give up on your health because of temporary discomfort! Choose to make cooked, steamed or grilled, veggies 60% of your diet, non-glutinous grains and aduki/mung beans 20% and quality protein source 20%. Lots of water, rest and your supplements will cleanse the toxins out of your body faster and ease your symptoms during the process. Follow thru with these recommendations, rid your body of candida and the enjoy the benefits of clean eating!

4 SuperFoods to Boost your Iron & Protein

Us modern folk tend to think of nutritional deficiencies as something that happens is less-rich, less-privileged countries but did you know that according to the WHO iron deficiency “is the only nutrient deficiency which is also significantly prevalent in Industrialized Countries”?? That’s us! Even living in the big city we are not safe from nutritional deficiencies. Iron deficiency is particularly common in women due to our monthly cycles.

I never really thought of this nutrient until I was 3-4 days into my cleanse and I noticed I was starting to feel weak and had less energy than normal; I was also craving meat. Being a health coach I’m attuned to the needs of my body and knew I was missing something. I looked under my lower eyelids and instead of them being pink with the little blood vessels, my coloring was a little on the pale side. I also was beginning to get under-eye circles. I remember being told as a young girl that I was slightly anemic and if it was true then it could be true now. So I started looking for ways to increase my iron intake while still keeping to my cleanse.

These are some wonderful iron-rich food sources I found to be helpful! These 4 are the excellent superfoods - nutritionally packed! Some of them you may not have heard of before..

  1. Raw Cacao - the original chocolate! By adding this to your juices, nut milk or smoothies you will be getting 314% of the US RDA of iron per ounce. It is the highest plant-based source of iron at 7.3mg per 100g. There are also the added benefits of it having mood-enhancing capabilities, it has loads of antioxidants and other trace minerals; and it has more calcium than cow’s milk (160mg per 100g vs. 125mg per 100ml).

  2. Maca - an adaptogen, it helps regulate your hormones, increasing energy levels, boosting your immune system and increasing oxygen in the blood. It is also an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and micronutrients and is known to improve anemia, chronic fatigue and a host of other ailments.

  3. Spirulina - a freshwater algae that is a complete source of protein (65-71% protein - the highest concentration of any food), rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, E, K - kinda looks like an IP address no??), minerals, trace minerals, antioxidants, etc. It is a blood builder and contains as much iron as red meat, helping alleviate anemia, increasing hemoglobin and increasing red blood cell formation. It also boosts your immune system and with all its antioxidants, it protects your DNA from damage.

  4. Chlorella - is another single-celled water algae that is extremely rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids,  etc. It is rich in chlorophyll which is one of the best food substances for rejuvenating blood and detoxifying your bowels and liver. It also boosts your immune system, has a high protein content (60% pure digestible protein), and causes growth in the healthy (and healing) gut bacteria in our stomachs promoting good digestion.

In order to increase the absorption of plant-based iron make sure to pair it with vitamin C rich foods, like camu-camu berry powder, oranges, grapefruits, berries, etc. I added Chlorella and Cacao to my cleanse, and occasionally Maca to give me the added boost I needed. Chlorella and Spirulina are excellent sources of protein and Chlorella is a potent detoxifiers.

Spirulina - 1-2 teaspoons is a good dose for adults; athletes can go for 2 tablespoons (~30g).

Chlorella - 1 teaspoon is a good start for adults.

Maca - 1 tablespoon is good to start off with.

Cacao - 1 tablespoon per quart works great for beverages.

Tropical Green Smoothie

1 large handful organic baby spinach (or kale)

1 cup pineapple, cubes (can be frozen)

1/2 cup organic strawberries, frozen

2 scoops Purium Power Shake

3 cups purified water (more/less can be used depending on how smooth/thick your preference)

1 tbsp organic raw maca powder

1 tbsp organic raw cacao powder

1 tbsp chia seeds

1 tsp chlorella

Using a blender, blend until smooth and enjoy!

Day 1 of my 10-Day Transformation

I came across these great products that I’ve been guiding a few of my clients through. A cleanse. A solid cleanse that has no chemicals or fillers, is organic and vegan-friendly, and actually helps your body build lean muscle while losing fat. After seeing the results of my clients I decided to give it a try for myself. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a cleanse. And I’ve done just about every ‘cleanse’ out there - raw, vegan, juicing, grapefruit cleanse, master cleanse, etc. And those cleanses never worked for me. I usually didn’t lose any weight and I was a pain-in-the-rear to deal with!! Not a good combo.

Until I came across this cleanse. Purium. (Feel free to do your homework! :)

I was very pleased with their practices. They manufacture all their products to a super-high standard! They are organic. Gluten-free. Vegan. Free of chemicals, fillers, stabilizers, etc. I don’t recommend anything that I wouldn’t put in my body myself! My hesitation in trying this cleanse was that I don’t have much weight to lose!! (I know..if only you could have that same ‘problem’!) I eat lots of veggies & fruits, organic. Healthy fats and lean, organic protein. I drink lots of water. I exercise pretty regularly. But I decided to give the cleanse a try anyway! I can stand to gain more lean muscle and if I lose a little more ‘fat’ I’m cool.

Today was Day 1. And it wasn’t completely easy. I had a networking breakfast this morning at 7am. There were hard boiled eggs and bagels with cream cheese (which I would never touch!) but I stayed true to the cleanse. I only had tea and then I went home to drink my Power Shake, which was yummy!! I took my Amino Acids. I was a good girl - until lunch! My friend was having a yummy baby spinach salad with jerked chicken and I couldn’t resist. I had a few bites of the salad. But I mean a few - maybe 4 - no more than 5 bites. I could’ve ‘cheated’ with something unhealthy but I went with salad and a very small amount of it. It’s the chicken that did me in! The baby spinach is on my ok-list, so long as it’s organic.

Going forward, I am determined to stick to my cleanse (plus a couple of the pre-approved foods on my list) for the remaining (little over) 9 days! I want to see how lean I can get and the only way to see the results is to stick with the cleanse! I’m excited!! Maybe I’ll even get the beginnings of a 6-pack.

Some good reasons to do a high quality cleanse?

  1. To break your addiction to processed foods & sugar

  2. To cleanse your body (from all the toxins and chemicals, etc)

  3. To improve digestion

  4. To improve your lifestyle

  5. and in the case of this particular cleanse - To lose weight, sustainably

It’s time to stop counting calories. Stop listening to the latest fad dietary advice. Pay attention to the chemicals and sugar you are putting your body. Learn what’s best for your body’s nourishment needs. Go for real nutrition and your body will be the picture of fitness and health! I’ll keep y’all posted on my progress!  If you have any questions, feel free to ask and if you're up for the cleanse - use the gift card code: BERADIANT

Keep Your Liver Happy with these 8 Foods

Have you ever given your liver much thought?? If you’re like most people, you haven’t. Even I didn’t give my liver much thought until I started taking better care of my body and health. Knowing what I now know has really helped me and my clients be more aware of our bodies and how to help them function at their best. The liver is a vital organ for a reason. Your liver does a lot to keep you healthy - it removes harmful materials from your bloodstream and it aids in digestion. It helps your immune system fight off infections. Your liver converts your food into nutrients your body can use, stores vitamins and minerals and produces proteins and enzymes.

Issues with your liver can be inherited or caused by an infection but there are a lot of things that can go wrong if you (inadvertently) mistreat your liver. Mistreating your liver can raise your risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity, cause chronic fatigue and headaches, lead to digestive issues and many other ailments.

There are some common substances people consume (sometimes, excessively) that can create issues; white sugar, alcohol, tobacco, and coffee. Yes, even too much coffee can overload your liver. I always encourage people to be aware of their sugar consumption and all the different forms it comes in - with the ultimate goal of bringing your sugar consumption down to around 0.

What can you eat to boost your liver health??

  1. Garlic - raw, organic garlic is a delicious to keep your liver healthy (and keep the vampires at bay!).  It helps your liver flush out toxins. In order to fully activate the enzymes in the garlic, after chopping/crushing it, let it stand for 15 minutes before using it.

  2. Grapefruit - eating a grapefruit or drinking fresh grapefruit juice helps your liver flush out toxins and carcinogens! I’m not a big fan of grapefruits but a couple times a week with a little (less than a teaspoon) raw honey is something I can do. Try it.

  3. Beets - these have to be organic. There is nothing healthy about franken-beets. The plant-flavonoids in organic beets boost overall liver function. This is a very cleansing veggie.

  4. Leafy Greens - like organic spinach, swiss chard work to neutralize metals, chemicals and pesticides protecting the liver.

  5. Cruciferous Vegetables - like broccoli, kale and brussels sprouts help increase enzyme production which aids in digestion.

  6. Green Tea - is not only good for helping your body burn fat and boosting digestion but it also improves liver function.

  7. Avocados - help your body produce a certain antioxidant, glutathione, that helps your liver filter out harmful materials.

  8. Lemons - are not only loaded with vitamin C but they also are a digestive aid and help our bodies remove toxins. I start my day with a glass of room temperature water with the juice of lemon.

Baby Spinach & Beet Salad

2 large handfuls organic baby spinach

1 organic beet, diced

1 avocado, sliced

½ grapefruit, wedges

½ lemon, juiced

1 tbsp organic extra virgin olive oil

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

sprinkle of celtic sea salt

Rinse the baby spinach and add the beets and grapefruit wedges and avocado to a bowl. Juice the lemon and drizzle the olive oil all over the veggies. Sprinkle the turmeric and sea salt and toss well.

Why Chlorella??

I am always super pleased when I find a food that heals and rejuvenates my body. I’m naturally curious and when I started reading about the health and healing benefits of this algae I became hooked!! Chlorella. When I first began my journey to heal my body I wondered how I would go about cleansing and detoxifying my body of all the chemicals, pesticides, hormones, toxins I had ingested for over a quarter of a century. I figured it would take the next 20+ years to really get on the right track and avoid the cancers, heart disease, obesity, diabetes etc that are now rampant. But thankfully, that is not the case! The body is truly an amazing organism.

Every single one of us, no matter how careful we are, ingest toxins. It may not be via your food, you eat organic and hormone, antibiotic-free and humanely raised, but it can be via the water your drink or the air you breathe. Like it or not environmental pollutants are part and parcel of modern life. Doing something about it on a larger scale will take time and the efforts of conscientious individuals but you can do something about it on the smaller scale - your body and your family’s bodies.

Why you should get some chlorella in your life?

  1. An awesome detoxifier! It is capable of removing alcohol, heavy metals and certain pesticides, herbicides & PCBs from your body.

  2. Supports your immune system by rejuvenating your blood and restoring your white blood cells.

  3. Enzymes aid in digestion and create healthy gut bacteria.

  4. Excellent source of pure, digestible protein! 60% vs the 18-30% in animal products like beef, chicken and fish.

  5. Extremely rich in vitamins and minerals! Vitamin C and E and all of the B vitamins, amino acids, folic acid, beta-carotene, lysine, iodine, iron and calcium.

  6. Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) dramatically increases the rate of rebuilding and healing of the body’s tissues (even rebuilding nerve damage) and fights free-radical damage.

Wonderful benefits huh?? There are loads of studies from ones from Japan that cited positive results when used after the nuclear catastrophes to studies that have shown improved immune function in people undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to being used to help treat patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. When starting to incorporate chlorella to your diet it is best to start slow - aim for 3 grams a day (~½ teaspoon). Once your body gets used to it, you can increase to 1 teaspoon a day. You can look for cracked-cell wall chlorella supplements or powdered chlorella. Make sure it comes from a clean water source. I usually take 5 tablets every day and occasionally add powdered chlorella to my smoothies and even my guacamole.

Dirtiest Produce?? Go Organic For These

Every year a report is compiled by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) from data the US Department of Agriculture gathered in 2012, from samples they took from 48 different kinds of fruits and vegetables, that lists the filthiest and most pesticide-laden fruits and veggies. It’s called the “Dirty Dozen”. Some of the fruits and veggies are always on the list and some switch position within the list. It is very important to know which foods you should prioritize on your grocery list as “Organic”. The economy and our wallets aren’t as prosperous as they used to be so pays for us to know when to buy organic and when it’s ok to buy conventional produce.

Dirty Dozen

  1. Apples

  2. Strawberries

  3. Grapes

  4. Celery

  5. Peaches

  6. Spinach

  7. Sweet Bell Peppers

  8. Nectarines (imported)

  9. Cucumbers

  10. Cherry Tomatoes

  11. Snap Peas (imported)

  12. Potatoes

**SPECIAL NOTE - although Kale, Collard Greens and Hot Peppers aren't on the "official" list - they still contain particularly harmful, toxic chemicals, such as organophosphates and carbamate insecticides. So, go organic for these too!

According to the research, every sample of imported nectarines and 99% of apple samples tested positive for the residue of at least 1 pesticide and the average potato has more pesticides by weight than any other food. Gross huh?? A single grape sample contained 15 pesticides. And single samples of celery, strawberries, imported snap peas and cherry tomatoes contained 15 different pesticides apiece. This really makes me want to grow my own food!! I wish I had the time and a garden to enjoy as many fresh fruits and vegetables. It disturbs me that our government which is supposed to protect its citizens allows our food supply to be so contaminated but… that is another story for another day. Keep this list in mind when you’re shopping for your fruits and veggies! Oh and if you’re like me and make smoothies or juice fruits and veggies remember that these veggies should be organic even if they aren’t on the Dirty Dozen list. You don’t want to ruin the direct infusion of vitamins and minerals with pesticides!

This is one of my favorite smoothies! I usually have it as my breakfast - quick and clean.

Tropical Detox Smoothie

3 organic kale leaves, destalked

2 cups organic almond milk

1 organic apple, cored

½ cup organic mango, frozen

½ packet organic Sambazon acai, frozen

1 tbsp organic coconut oil

**Blend and enjoy!
