Why Chlorella??

I am always super pleased when I find a food that heals and rejuvenates my body. I’m naturally curious and when I started reading about the health and healing benefits of this algae I became hooked!! Chlorella. When I first began my journey to heal my body I wondered how I would go about cleansing and detoxifying my body of all the chemicals, pesticides, hormones, toxins I had ingested for over a quarter of a century. I figured it would take the next 20+ years to really get on the right track and avoid the cancers, heart disease, obesity, diabetes etc that are now rampant. But thankfully, that is not the case! The body is truly an amazing organism.

Every single one of us, no matter how careful we are, ingest toxins. It may not be via your food, you eat organic and hormone, antibiotic-free and humanely raised, but it can be via the water your drink or the air you breathe. Like it or not environmental pollutants are part and parcel of modern life. Doing something about it on a larger scale will take time and the efforts of conscientious individuals but you can do something about it on the smaller scale - your body and your family’s bodies.

Why you should get some chlorella in your life?

  1. An awesome detoxifier! It is capable of removing alcohol, heavy metals and certain pesticides, herbicides & PCBs from your body.

  2. Supports your immune system by rejuvenating your blood and restoring your white blood cells.

  3. Enzymes aid in digestion and create healthy gut bacteria.

  4. Excellent source of pure, digestible protein! 60% vs the 18-30% in animal products like beef, chicken and fish.

  5. Extremely rich in vitamins and minerals! Vitamin C and E and all of the B vitamins, amino acids, folic acid, beta-carotene, lysine, iodine, iron and calcium.

  6. Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) dramatically increases the rate of rebuilding and healing of the body’s tissues (even rebuilding nerve damage) and fights free-radical damage.

Wonderful benefits huh?? There are loads of studies from ones from Japan that cited positive results when used after the nuclear catastrophes to studies that have shown improved immune function in people undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to being used to help treat patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. When starting to incorporate chlorella to your diet it is best to start slow - aim for 3 grams a day (~½ teaspoon). Once your body gets used to it, you can increase to 1 teaspoon a day. You can look for cracked-cell wall chlorella supplements or powdered chlorella. Make sure it comes from a clean water source. I usually take 5 tablets every day and occasionally add powdered chlorella to my smoothies and even my guacamole.

Some recipes to try…

Aurea’s Super Guacamole

4 ripe, organic avocados

1 organic tomato, diced

1 organic red onion, finely diced

1 handful organic cilantro, finely chopped

1 tsp cumin, organic

1 tsp garlic powder, organic

1 tsp himalayan sea salt

2 organic limes, juiced

1 tbsp chlorella, powder

1 tsp cayenne pepper, organic

*Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mash the avocados and stir everything together. Enjoy!

Detox Summer Smoothie

1 large handful baby spinach, organic

1 banana, organic

12 cherries, organic

1 cup almond milk, organic

1 cup purified water (optional)

1 tsp chlorella powder

*Place all ingredients in a blender (make sure the cherry pits are removed) and blend. Feel free to add the purified water if you want a smoother consistency. Happy Blending!

Lose Belly Fat with these Foods

We hear it all the time - stress kills. Stress is super bad for your health. But did you know that stress also causes your body to store fat around your midsection. And, as you may already know, that fat is very hard to lose. The hormone that makes this happen is cortisol & most people don’t know what signs to look for.

Signs of High Cortisol

  • Weight Gain (especially in your abdomen)

  • Blood Sugar Imbalances (crave sugar?? get shaky when you don’t eat regularly??)

  • Losing muscle mass

  • Memory Loss

  • Poor quality sleep/tired even when you’ve slept well

  • Unexplained backaches and headaches

  • Catch colds and infections easily

  • Cravings for unhealthy foods

  • Poor sex drive

  • Anxious/depressed feelings

  • Stomach issues like nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, heartburn or constipation

Some of these clicking in your head? I know when I read these I was thinking...Bingo!! Now, what to do about it?? Because I don’t know about you but I want to have rejuvenating sleep and a thinner waistline. Oh, and I need my memory to be on point if I’m going to learn my scenes! ;)

Lower Cortisol by…

Eating more Spinach - these greens have Magnesium which helps the body balance cortisol levels.

Adding Beans (White) and Barley to your diet - they contain a phospholipid that may help counteract the adverse effects of cortisol by having a calming effect on your nerves and improving your sleep.

Snacking on Citrus -the vitamin C in fruits like kiwis, oranges and grapefruits help slow the production of cortisol and are better for your waistline than carb-rich snacks.

Upping your Omega 3 Fatty Acids - found in fish like mackerel, sardines and haddock and nuts like walnuts and flaxseeds not only do these reduce inflammation in your body but they also reduce your stress levels and hence, your cortisol!

Eating Microgreens - are baby plants (less than 14 days old) that have a higher concentration of nutrients than adult plants. Micro versions of cilantro and red cabbage may contain up to 4 to 6 times the stress fighting vitamin C as their mature counterparts.

Drinking Tulsi (Holy Basil) Tea - is an effective way to reduce your stress/anxiety levels. This herb is an adaptogen that helps reduce the production of stress hormones. This is definitely on my list of nightcaps! :)

Adding a good Zinc supplement -  can help inhibit the secretion of cortisol according to studies. Make sure your diet has solid sources of zinc; 3 ounces of lean, grass fed beef via a pot roast, short ribs or round steak is a good start.  Or you can opt for some seafood, like oysters - 6 medium sized oysters contain over 70 mg of zinc.

Eating some (Quality) Dark Chocolate - by some I mean a piece or two and of good, organic quality. Dark Chocolate has tons of antioxidants that can decrease the inflammation in your body and slow cortisol production. The results of one study indicated that consuming about 40 grams of dark chocolate per day reduced cortisol levels.

I know I’ve got my marching orders!! :)  I’m not going to allow the routine stress of day to day life to add inches to my waistline. Adding a meditation practice into your life is another way to reduce your stress and manage your cortisol levels too. Take these tips, turn them into daily practices and you will rest easier and watch the excess inches melt away.

So Many Reasons...to Use RAW Apple Cider Vinegar

I’ve been hearing about the myriad of benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for awhile now but only recently have I started really paying attention and experimenting with it in my day to day. I have to say I really like the benefits!

Oh, before I get into it, just be sure that your Apple Cider Vinegar is RAW. Your bottle has to contain the ‘mother of the vinegar’ which is what gives the healing properties to ACV. So remember, RAW and “mother of the vinegar”. If it is clear, filtered, processed it loses its healing properties!

Back to the healing properties! Did you know you can use it to make your hair shiny, clear up acne and soothe a sunburn?? I knew the hair thing but not the other two! These are just a few of the benefits. I use it as mouthwash pre-brushing to kill off bacteria and whiten my chompers. This will loosen up any mucus in your sinuses which is awesome!! Because it helps relieve allergies and keeps sinus infections away (which I used to get several times a year!!). I sip it in purified water to keep my body’s pH balanced - this increases my energy levels and protects me from illness - and to keep my waistline trim - especially now that bikini season is upon us!   

Some Benefits of ACV?

  • Aid in weight-loss - studies have shown that the acetic acid, found in raw ACV, reduces abdominal fat, inches around your waist, weight and triglycerides (which contribute to bad cholesterol).

  • Boosts energy by balancing your body’s pH levels - when your body is too acidic (lower pH levels) it can be more prone to infections and a variety of illnesses and have low energy levels which ACV helps reverse. Raw ACV helps the body maintain a healthy alkaline environment.

  • Useful in Detoxification - Raw ACV helps break up mucus throughout the body (which can help with allergies, sinus congestion and even sinus infections), helps stimulate cardiovascular circulation and detoxify your liver.

You can add Raw Apple Cider Vinegar to your salads, or your salad dressing, even in your smoothies! Be sure to check out my recipe for a great fat burning drink using ACV.

  • For helping alkalinize your body, weight loss and maintenance you can add 1 tablespoon of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, before your meals.

  • For treating acute conditions like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, sore throat you can add 2 tablespoons of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, after your meals

Fat Burning & Detoxifying Drink

16 oz purified water

2 tbsp Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, organic (**make sure it is RAW and has the ‘mother of the vinegar’ in it**)

½ organic lemon, squeezed (can use 1 whole lemon)

1 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon, ground

1 tsp raw honey (optional)

Mix with a spoon and drink to your health!

Want to be Ageless??

Ever wonder why people can be the same age but look so different?? One just looks older. Even when I was a little girl I was curious about this phenomenon. They say that it’s just genetics and that there isn’t a thing you can do about it. But what if that isn’t the case?? What if you can turn on and off the way your genes manifest themselves? What if you could create an environment to that allows your body to heal itself?? If every, seemingly, ‘small’ action you took on a day by day basis compounded upon itself over time, what would you do different?

I know what I would do differently. That’s why I started studying diet, nutrition and holistic healing. Everything is cause and effect. Every action has a reaction. This is science. It is unavoidable. The thing is that it is easy to get so sucked up into living your life that you don’t realize the choices you are making. There is loads of conflicting information out there too! This is why I came up with the idea of doing a 21-day anti-aging challenge! To introduce little changes, some that people aren’t aware of and others that they know but haven’t done. There is no ‘small’ choice. Every thing that we do affects our bodies and minds. Every thing we eat becomes our cells. Is what you are feeding your body and mind creating beautiful skin? or is it creating wrinkles?? Are you providing your body with the tools to fight off disease?? Are you giving your body the nourishment it needs to build strong hair and nails?? What are you building?

Every woman, and men too, want to look and feel their best! It is part of human nature. Knowledge is power and what I am going to share with you during this challenge has the power to positively impact your well-being and your life. The challenge will be done virtually. You will receive a daily email with the challenge of the day and it will be up to you to do it that day. Each daily challenge will be easy to do, fun and informative.
