Rejuvenate your Skin with Berries

Ah Berries… It is Springtime and soon summer will be here and berries will be all over! Not that we can’t get berries at any time of year but it is always better to eat foods that are in season. Did you know that berries are at least 85% water?? Makes sense when you think of how juicy they are huh? They are loaded with water and fiber as well as many antioxidants. The fiber in berries help fill you up and, along with the water in them, help you get into that bikini!

  • Blueberries

  • Strawberries

The antioxidants these little guys contain allow your body to fight off and repair DNA damage and inflammation, that over time can lead to major illnesses. Anthocyanins (give berries their rich, vibrant color), quercetin and vitamin C are a few of the powerful antioxidants in berries. Anthocyanins reduce inflammation in the body and may help prevent and relieve pain from arthritis. Berries can also help slow age-related memory loss as the anthocyanins and quercetin found in them work together to make this happen. Quercetin is another powerful anti-inflammatory; it can help people with conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Vitamin C helps promote the health of the collagen in our skin and aids in maintaining cartilage stores and joint flexibility. The vitamin C in berries keeps our skin clear and luminous and our hair full and healthy. The fiber in berries help our bodies release excess weight and lowers blood pressure and cholesterol. Folate supports our bodies in producing serotonin, it may also help stabilize our mood and ward off depression.     

It is very important to be aware that most commercially produced berries are loaded with pesticides and fungicides (Strawberries are #2 on the latest Dirty Dozen list) and these chemicals really mess with our bodies by disrupting our hormones and often get stored in our fat cells. So, get your berries from organic sources or visit your Farmer’s Markets and talk to the farmers about their methods for growing your berries.  Be sure to eat your berries and enjoy the benefits of improved health, a slimmer waistline and great skin and hair!

Strawberry Superfood Smoothie

1 ½ - 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (rice/flax milk are options)

1 ½ cups organic strawberries, frozen/fresh

1 organic banana, fresh

1 tbsp raw cacao powder

1 tbsp hemp, cacao , maca superfood powder (this is the one I have)

1 tbsp organic chia seeds

½ cup ice cubes

Cleanest Fruits & Veggies

On Tuesday I wrote about the infamous “Dirty Dozen” - the list of most contaminated fruits and veggies. Today I will tell you about the “Clean Fifteen” - the least contaminated fruits and veggies. I do my best to go organic as often as I can, especially when I am making smoothies and juicing the fruits and veggies in question. I can actually taste the difference between organic and non-organic produce. I can taste the chemicals - it is an awful, bitter taste!! (you should see the face I’m making as I’m writing this!! Not pretty!) You could probably taste the difference too! And you will taste it even more once your body has been exorcised of all the unhealthy chemicals its been exposed to! That’s the wonderful thing about clean eating, your taste buds will reawaken and you will be able to enjoy so many more tastes and textures than you did before.. (and your body will be healthier and look way better; how does it get better than that?? ;))

Clean Fifteen

  1. Avocados

  2. Sweet Corn

  3. Pineapples

  4. Cabbage

  5. Sweet Peas (frozen)

  6. Onions

  7. Asparagus

  8. Mangoes

  9. Papayas

I can’t tell you how happy I am that Avocados are on this list(they were the cleanest, with only 1% of samples showing pesticides)! I live for these little guys! Sweet corn has other issues...most corn in the US is Genetically Modified so I avoid them. Pineapples (89% of samples had no pesticides) are my Go-To fruit when juicing, especially after the rare occasions when I have a steak. The enzymes in pineapples (raw, fresh pineapples) help break down the protein and makes digestion much easier. This is particularly important if your blood type is A, like me, or AB.

Aurea’s Super-Guacamole

3-4 ripe avocados, mashed

1 organic tomato, diced

1 small red onion, diced

1 handful fresh cilantro, finely chopped

2 organic limes, juiced

1 tsp cumin

1 tbsp chlorella

2 tsp Himalayan sea salt

1 tsp cayenne pepper (*optional)

**Mix ingredients thoroughly and enjoy!

Want to be Ageless??

Ever wonder why people can be the same age but look so different?? One just looks older. Even when I was a little girl I was curious about this phenomenon. They say that it’s just genetics and that there isn’t a thing you can do about it. But what if that isn’t the case?? What if you can turn on and off the way your genes manifest themselves? What if you could create an environment to that allows your body to heal itself?? If every, seemingly, ‘small’ action you took on a day by day basis compounded upon itself over time, what would you do different?

I know what I would do differently. That’s why I started studying diet, nutrition and holistic healing. Everything is cause and effect. Every action has a reaction. This is science. It is unavoidable. The thing is that it is easy to get so sucked up into living your life that you don’t realize the choices you are making. There is loads of conflicting information out there too! And there is simply LOADS of information out there. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to health and wellness because each and every one of us in unique.

This is why I came up with the idea of doing a 21-day anti-aging challenge! To introduce little changes, some that people aren’t aware of and others that they know but haven’t done. There is no ‘small’ choice. Every thing that we do affects our bodies and minds. Every thing we eat becomes our cells. Is what you are feeding your body and mind creating beautiful skin? or is it creating wrinkles?? Are you providing your body with the tools to fight off disease?? Are you giving your body the nourishment it needs to build strong hair and nails?? What are you building?

Every woman, and men too, want to look and feel their best! It is part of human nature. Knowledge is power and what I am going to share with you during this challenge has the power to positively impact your well-being and your life. The challenge will be done virtually. You will receive a daily email with the challenge of the day and it will be up to you to do it that day. Each daily challenge will be easy to do, fun and informative. Each daily challenge will be powerful as well! My goal is to empower my sisters in growing wiser and more confident with the passing years and to view the aging process as a joyful one!
