Slow Aging with Glutathione

There is a lot of talk about antioxidants and their importance to our health and the rejuvenation of our cells. We’re a (very) youth-oriented culture, what can I say? I don’t think any human being can actually say they look forward to aging or falling ill or death… But alas, they are all part of our humanity. That being said, it doesn’t give one carte blanche to binge on Haagen-Dazs and cheesy-crust pizza. Aren’t we alive to actually feel alive?? So why would we do things, to our bodies and minds, that undermine the quality of our years on this planet?? For some it is ignorance. For others, it is being led astray by shiny packaging that promise ‘nutrients’ and ‘low-insert the latest whatever here’ but instead give your body chemicals and disease. For others it is apathy. I can’t help the latter. No hay peor ciego, que el que no quiere ver. (None are more blind than those who refuse to see.) But I can offer my knowledge and expertise to those who are seeking and desire to make changes. Woohoo!! :)

Let’s talk about Glutathione - the body’s master antioxidant and detoxifier. Your body produces glutathione for protection and survival but sometimes it doesn’t produce enough of it. Stress. Poor dietary and eating habits. Illness. Aging. Low levels of Glutathione have been linked to many illnesses and premature aging.

Some benefits of this master antioxidant are:

  • improved sleep

  • improved mental focus

  • living longer

  • improves condition of hair, skin and nails

  • increased energy

  • improved sports performance

  • slows the aging process

Foods that Boost Glutathione Production

  1. Sulfur-rich veggies like onions, garlic, parsley, leeks, shallots

  2. Cruciferous veggies like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, bok choy, brussel sprouts, kale, watercress

  3. Grass-fed red meat and grass-fed organ meat

  4. Organic Turmeric

  5. Fruits like apples, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, bananas

  6. Avocados

  7. Squash

  8. Tomatoes

  9. Raw milk and eggs

Getting regular exercise and actively reducing stress levels also work to boost your body’s production of Glutathione. Always go with organic fruits and vegetables! If you desire to reap the detoxifying and rejuvenating effects of boosting Glutathione don’t add chemicals, pesticides and toxins. When it comes meat, dairy & eggs, the same is valid. Go organic, grass-fed, antibiotic and hormone free!

Make Fear Afraid of YOU!

Ever wonder what’s behind procrastinating?? What’s behind your not wanting to make that phone call? Or attend that networking event? Or perform in that showcase? Tackle that new job assignment? Some of us may think that it’s laziness or disinterest. Some of us may delude ourselves into thinking that our schedules just won’t allow for that. I know that’s one of my favorite excuses. I’m too busy. But if I am honest with myself, it is fear. FEAR. That four-letter word that few of us actually admit to feeling. And if we do, sometimes we are paralyzed by it. And some of us may not even realize we’re paralyzed! Sound familiar??

I was on a call last night that dealt with this exact topic and outlined some strategies for overcoming fear. It was just what I needed to hear so I figured I should share it with you. First let me tell you some of the things I’ve been procrastinating on.

  1. Writing this article! (Did you see that one coming?)

  2. Emailing a candid shot of myself to a commercial casting director

  3. Reviewing some investment materials

I can give you ‘reasons’...I want to have just a little makeup on before I take that pic! I need to do some more research. I am pressed for time and can’t look at those materials. But the truth is… I am afraid! I am scared of making those moves. Because those moves mean I am being proactive about my future. My livelihood. My career. My life. So last night’s call was particularly timely for me. Through it I was able to recognize and face my fears and I now have a game plan for how to move beyond my fear. Cause we can’t create the lives of our dreams if we allow ourselves to be paralyzed, in any way, shape or form, no matter how minor, by our fear.

Here’s how to kick fear’s ass, on the regular:

  1. Become a fear detective - learn your fear ‘triggers’

  2. Dialogue with fear (aloud) - when I’ve done this (I’m alone) I’ve found that speaking my fears aloud makes me realize how unfounded they are and often, how irrational.

  3. Take domain over the brain - the Buddhist term I’ve learned for this one is to master your mind! You can list your fears and shred them. Write out new truths for yourself and speak these aloud daily. Or you can do what  I do. I acknowledge whatever craziness is going in my head and then I tell it to SIT DOWN & SHUT the F UP!! No one is talking to you!!! And proceed with whatever I want my mind to think and I do it. :)

  4. Action. Action. Action. - just doing whatever it is you are afraid of can work miracles! Just do it! Move through your fear and do it! I always feel especially empowered when I just do the things I’m avoiding.

  5. Pro-active fear busting strategies

    1. Daily rituals

    2. Journaling

    3. Free Form Writing

    4. Meditation practice

    5. Having a supportive community around you

I chant daily. Morning and evening. This is what speaks to my soul. I’m sure I chanted in the womb. (Thanks mommy!! :) I also have a wonderful community, friends I can go to to reinvigorate myself. And when I’m feeling particularly bleh, I write. I journal or do some free-form writing. Writing out whatever’s in my head always allows my inner wisdom to redirect my thoughts and mood towards a more positive and uplifting direction.

Just delving a little deeper into our awareness of the self can have a huge impact on how we go about our lives. It’s improved my life and the lives of countless people I know. I am so grateful to one of my mentor’s, Cora, who actually outlined these tips, last night, in a coherent manner so I can more easily share it with you. And apparently there was a  reason for my procrastination - so that I can share my fears and help myself and others move beyond their fears with me! It’s always better when we know we aren’t alone on our journey, isn’t it??
