Belotero for your Under-Eye Circles??

I'm disturbed. I was perusing Instagram, as I often do, looking for things to make me smile or laugh or inspire me, when I saw an image that deeply disturbed me and made me question what I, as a woman, will do in the name of "beauty". The medi-spa in question was advertising fillers to treat under eye circles & even said they were caused by lack of sleep, allergies, poor diet & lifestyle related issues. The only bit of truth in their post! I will admit that I have looked into fillers for my under eye circles but I have never jumped on board the injectibles-train because I LOVE my face too much!!! Yes, I love MY face. It's mine. I was born with it (well, minus my minor nose-’correction’ by a fabulous surgeon;)) but other than that, no needles have been used to "enhance" my face. I mean, what if the sucker f*cks up??! Then what??

I will admit to what I use to 'enhance' my skin here though.

It's called NUTRITION.

I have under eye circles - that I've contemplated getting "fixed" BUT I know the only real fix is for me to reflect on what I'm doing to my body and CHANGE my habits. Sure, some of us are blessed with better genetics from the get go (Thank you Mami! :)) but regardless of whether you were "born with it" there are things you can do to help your skin out & specifically to address under eye circles. We are all aging - but don't you want to age slower?? More gracefully??

4 Skin faux-pas

1. Sugar

2. Refined/Processed Foods

3. Dairy

4. Chemicals - anything labeled "diet/low-fat/non-fat/fat-free/zero calorie/etc

You can read more on these here.

What causes Under Eye Circles??

  • Iron or B12 deficiency - anemia

  • Poor vitamin and mineral absorption (underlying gut condition)

  • Allergies

  • Dehydration

  • Nasal Congestion/Sinus Infection

  • Lifestyle Factors - excess alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, too many caffeinated drinks, cigarette smoking, lack of exercise and stress

So, what do I use for my skin (and under eye circles)??

1. Lots and lots of greens & colorful veggies! I aim for 1/2 plate full of veggies for lunch and dinner.

2. Lots of organic berries and fresh fruits. I aim for 3-4 portions every day. I also make it a point to load up on superfoods like açai, blueberries & goji berries.

3. Maca and Cacao are staples in my daily routine. Maca helps the body manage stress better and helps maintain a healthy hormonal balance. Cacao a.k.a REAL chocolate is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. I have found 1 tbsp of each in my smoothies to make a difference.

4. Chlorella tablets are my besties. I'm slightly anemic. Most ladies are borderline due to our monthly visitor. Chlorella helps build healthy red blood cells, supports the liver and a healthy gut to name a few of its benefits. I take 5-6 tablets daily.

5. Sleeeeeep!! I have a hard time falling asleep & it's due to my crazy schedule. I run 2 businesses. My mind is constantly going!! So I know I have to support my body in this area. I have added a quality Ashwaganda supplement & 1 tbsp of tart cherry concentrate in a little water at bedtime.

And just so there is no misunderstanding here. I am not saying that peels, IPL treatments, facials and the like are unnecessary. I use these tools too! I AM saying that a healthy diet and lifestyle are the foundation for good skin. Everything else is gravy and their effectiveness will increase with proper nutrition and hydration.

Oh & be wary of the "side effects" to my plan. They are as follows: increased energy, improved mood, releasing excess weight and inches, improved stress levels, increased ability to focus and concentrate and a natural love and appreciation for every bit of your body. Enjoy!! ;) xxA

4 Guidelines for Clear Skin

Acne. It is not just a problem for teenagers. Around 20% of women suffer from acne in their 20s and 30s. Men can go through it too. Acne can be caused by stress or hormonal fluctuations or nutritional imbalances in your diet. It can even be caused by your beauty routine or medications. But regardless of the ‘trigger’ the major culprit is inflammation.

Your skin says a lot about what’s going on on the inside. It is the largest organ of the body and it’s purpose is to protect your body from microbes and the elements, to regulate your body temperature and allow the sensations of touch, heat and cold. Your skin is there to protect you. But it is also the first thing people see when they meet you! Whether you are a salesperson, CEO or actor - your skin is part of the impression you make on another human being. Making it even more important to have a healthy, clear complexion - and a healthy, clear complexion comes from a healthy inside.

4 Cardinal Guidelines for Healthy, Clear Skin

  1. A diet rich in nutrient-dense foods, REAL foods

  2. Proper hydration - always drinks ½ your body weight in ounces daily

  3. A way to manage stress - exercise, meditation, music

  4. Proper, quality sleep - a good 7-9 hours every night

The first one isn’t that simple to explain. There are several factors to maintaining a diet rich in nutrient-dense foods, that will lead to decreasing inflammation in the body and clearing up your skin. I’m going to start with the foods to avoid (below) and share with you the best foods for clear skin in my next post on Thursday.

4 No-No's for Clear Skin

  1. Reduce/Limit Dairy - cow’s milk and cheeses are very pro-inflammatory, meaning they cause inflammation. They are best avoided but if you must eat a little cheese, choose organic, pasture-raised, hormone-free and antibiotic-free.

  2. No “Diet” or “Sugar-Free” or “Fat Free” or “Zero Calorie” or “Low-Fat” - if it has any of these (or other) “buzz words” it is full of chemicals and should be avoided (like the plague).

  3. Reduce/Limit Sugar - this is crucial to maintaining a healthy body and clear skin. There are added sugars in so many ‘foods’ and drinks because it makes those foods tasty and because sugar is addictive (it acts on your brain in the same way cocaine does). Read your labels carefully to know how much sugar is in your food in order to start making wiser choices and switch from sugary drinks and ‘juices’ to water.

  4. Avoid Processed, Refined Foods - white flour, bread, pasta, margarine, cold cuts, refined oils like canola, corn & vegetable oils, fast foods, white salt are all quasi-foods. They are lacking in nutrients, filled with chemicals, fillers and preservatives and cause unhealthy spikes in your blood sugar. All leading to inflammation.

These 4 Guidelines and 4 No-No's are the starting point to clear skin (and to a healthier you). Following these will reduce the inflammation in your body that can cause acne, clearing up your skin. Even if you don’t suffer from acne, these tips will help protect your skin from the environment and help it age better. I mean who doesn’t want beautiful, lit from within, skin??

Foods to Kill Candida Overgrowth

I’m of the school of “Do as I Do” so I started actively killing off the Candida in my system this week - as I was researching about what Candida overgrowth causes. I can tell you from personal experience, it isn’t a fun process. Depending on how much overgrowth of Candida you have, the symptoms of 'Candida Die-Off' can feel flu-like, bring on headaches and gastrointestinal issues..to put it mildly. I’ve been experiencing headaches, dizziness, itchiness and fatigue but there are other symptoms. I’m not telling you this to scare you from choosing to cleanse your body but to arm you with knowledge.

Cleaning up one’s diet and your body from harmful toxins and keeping our body’s flora and hormones balanced are an essential part of being healthy, avoiding illness and feeling our best!! Thankfully, there are things you can do to ease the symptoms of the Candida Die Off and to aid your liver in expelling the toxins!

Foods to Kill Candida

  1. Choose Non-Starchy Vegetables - this starves the candida of sugar (which feeds it and allows it to grow and multiply).

  2. Choose Deep Green Vegetables and Barley Grass Concentrates - these are rich in chlorophyll which supports your liver in removing toxins from your body.

  3. Eat Fresh, Organic, Antibiotic & Hormone-free Poultry - commercial poultry and livestock are fed antibiotics daily and ingesting even low levels of antibiotics can cause a proliferation of candida. Eggs, dairy and red meats have properties that promote candida growth and should be avoided for 3-4 weeks. Avoid processed meats and cold cuts too, as they are loaded with chemicals and sugar!

  4. Eat Wild Salmon, Herring, Sardines and Anchovies are loaded with healthy omega-3 fats that help heal inflammation in the body caused by candida overgrowth.

  5. Choose Non-Glutinous Grains - buckwheat, millet, quinoa and oat groats have high amounts of fiber which are excellent for keeping your digestive system moving and for removing candida toxins from your body.

  6. Eat Aduki Beans and Mung Beans are great for their fiber content and detoxifying effects and they are also among the best foods for limiting candida growth.

  7. Live Yogurt Cultures found in prebiotic, organic yogurt and kefir are essential in helping your gut repopulate the good bacteria and crowd out the candida.

Extra Credit - Avoiding/Easing Candida Die Off

You’re starting to kill of the candida overgrowth in your body and you’re not feeling so good...But now is not the time to give up! (If your symptoms are severe, you can ease up a little - but only a little!) Add these to your routine and feel better:

  • Increase your water intake to flush out the toxins faster.

  • Take an antioxidant supplement NAC with Molybdenum, 600mg, which help your body expel candida toxins and supports your liver and immune system.

  • Take a quality vitamin C supplement twice a day - I like the Synergy Company’s Pure Radiance C because it is an organic, whole-food naturally derived vitamin.

  • Slow down and rest as much as you can.

  • Drink Chicory Root coffee, Cinnamon tea, Pau d’Arco tea, Ginger tea and Licorice tea as they have anti-fungal properties and chicory root is a great prebiotic, helping repopulate your gut with healthy bacteria.

Don’t give up on your health because of temporary discomfort! Choose to make cooked, steamed or grilled, veggies 60% of your diet, non-glutinous grains and aduki/mung beans 20% and quality protein source 20%. Lots of water, rest and your supplements will cleanse the toxins out of your body faster and ease your symptoms during the process. Follow thru with these recommendations, rid your body of candida and the enjoy the benefits of clean eating!

Protect your Breasts

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and during this month emphasis is placed on raising money for breast cancer research. Advances have been made, like the identification of the BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes but there is always more to be done. There is one thing that is more important than research and raising funds - prevention!! Yep! PREVENTION! There are changes we can implement to protect ourselves and our loved ones from this cancer.

Diet and lifestyle are very important but too many they are also easy to overlook. A lot of my clients have the same complaint - ‘it is hard to eat right’. And it can be. In this city, we are often so busy that we forget to eat and then we choose unwisely because we are in a rush. Since it is so easy to make unwise choices when it comes to the food we eat, it is that much more important to learn how to choose well and choose the most nutritious foods above all others.

Choose these Cancer-Fighting Foods

  • Beans and Lentils - are rich fiber, folic acid and lignans. A Harvard Nurse’s Study found that those who consume beans and lentils at least twice a week are 24% less likely to get breast cancer than those who consume these less than once a week. Aim for 1 cup, 3-4 times per week.
  • Cruciferous Vegetables - like cabbage, kale, cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, watercress, arugula are rich phytochemicals - sulforaphanes and endals - that are potent anti-breast cancer agents. Eat these raw, lightly stir-fried in coconut oil or lightly steamed for maximum benefits. Aim for 2-3 cups a day!

  • Oranges -  rich in cancer fighting vitamin C and folic acid and provide every known class of anti-cancer phytochemicals. A great choice for a mid-afternoon snack.

  • Carotenoid-rich Veggies - like yellow and orange bell peppers, carrots, spinach, collards, sweet potatoes provide cancer protection. Light cooking increases the bio-availability of these powerful carotenoids. Mix these up with your cruciferous veggies!

  • Plums and Peaches - the antioxidants in organic plums and peaches rival those found in blueberries and may help kill breast cancer cells while keeping healthy cells intact. Snack on these to satisfy your sweet tooth!

  • Walnuts - may thwart the growth of breast cancer cells according to research found in the journal Nutrition and Cancer. Aim for 2 ounces a day.

  • Wild Salmon - is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which help reduce inflammation, which is thought to contribute to breast cancer. Eat wild salmon or another cold-water fatty fish 2-3 times a week.

  • Parsley and Celery - are rich in a phytochemical, apigenin, which might actually inhibit cancer-cell growth - according to University of Missouri scientists. Garnish your meals with fresh chopped parsley and celery daily.

There is no magic solution to breast cancer but if a healthy diet can help keep you cancer free isn’t it worth the effort? According to Cheryl L. Rock, Ph. D., R.D., a University of California professor of family and preventative medicine “A woman can cut her chance of cancer by as much as two-thirds with good nutrition and weight management.” What are you waiting for?? Think Pink and protect your breasts by incorporating these foods into your daily routine!

Peach-Mango Chia Cacao Smoothie

½ banana

1 cup organic peaches, frozen

1 cup mango, frozen

1 handful organic spinach

2 tbsp raw cacao powder

2 tbsp chia seeds

2 cups unsweetened almond milk

=>Blend well until desired consistency is achieved and enjoy!!

"Eat Right"?? Dispelling Common Mistakes

What is WRONG with this picture??

What is WRONG with this picture??

There is something wrong with this picture... Yes!! This picture =>

I read magazines and every once in awhile I see them promoting certain foods that are NOT good for you. I have a particular issue with this magazine because it is a ‘fitness and health’ magazine. I would think their staff would be better informed...but who knows what they were thinking when they approved this info-graphic. The other thing I have an issue with is that just by quick glance there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with this information. But there is.

I’ll explain where I am coming from when I say this. I am a Certified Health Coach who has personally experienced what many of my clients have experienced - they think they are healthy and on the surface they are! BUT!! They still are not achieving the results they want and should be achieving!! Which is where I come in. I help them get to the bottom of what is going on with their bodies and many of the times the choices they are making, which they think are “healthy” because of the (mis)information they’ve received, in reality are doing more harm than good.

Let’s go in!

Canola Oil - NOT A GOOD OIL TO CONSUME!! “Vegetable-based oils”? Not the thing to recommend. These oils are highly processed and in most cases come from genetically modified seeds. Ever heard of a Canola plant?? No, right. Because there is no plant called ‘canola’, from whose seeds the oil would be made. Canola (Rapeseed), Corn and Soybean oils are highly inflammatory and have been associated with inflammatory health problems including heart disease and cancer. Precisely the diseases you are looking to avoid!

=>DON’T USE CANOLA OIL!! GO FOR COCONUT OIL or GHEE for cooking purposes

What it SHOULD look like

What it SHOULD look like

Whole Grains - Why are they specifying “whole grains” and misleading you to think that white bread is a whole grain?? White bread and ‘whole wheat’ bread are NOT whole grains! I will give them some credit for having ‘rye, barley and oats’ specified but it is in small print and images speak louder than fine print.

=>WHITE and ‘WHOLE WHEAT’ BREAD ARE NOT A WHOLE GRAINS! GO FOR SPELT, EZEKIEL, MANNA (Barley, Quinoa, Oats are good too) Look for minimally processed breads!

Fruits - they say to eat ‘at least 1 whole fruit’ and ‘1 ½ cups of berries’ but you really should be eating 2-3 fruits a day. Apples and pears are great options but you need to be aware that apples are one of the fruits with the heaviest pesticide residues.

=>GO ORGANIC for the FRUITS you will EAT WHOLE like BERRIES, Blueberries or Strawberries, and APPLES and PEARS

Vegetables - they are encouraging you to eat ‘1 ½ cups of a variety of vegetables a day’ but unfortunately their suggestion falls significantly short of what we all should be eating a day. Considering the day to day stresses and how unbalanced our lives are...our bodies need ample vegetables to help keep it functioning optimally and vegetables give us energy!! Who doesn’t need energy?? (They also encourage weight loss ;))

=>GO for 2 cups of Vegetables per meal (ORGANIC, if they are on the “Dirty Dozen” list) with your Lunch AND Dinner

Fish - a great suggestion which should’ve been better executed. “3 or more servings a week” is a good suggestion. But, farmed (conventional) salmon is a highly polluted fish, as are most farmed fish. If you are choosing a farmed fish you want to choose sustainably farmed fish. You are choosing fish for their health benefits, when they are traditionally farmed they are pumped with antibiotics and chemicals (which is not what you want in your body).

=>GO WILD, whenever possible! IF NOT, choose SUSTAINABLY FARMED FISH

=>NEVER eat ‘Low-fat’ Dairy - anything ‘low fat’ or ‘non-fat’ (etc) is a Highly Processed ‘Food’

I know it’s a lot of information I just gave you but there’s so much more I didn’t even touch upon!! The things I want to leave you with, for your continued, improved health and well-being are the arrows above and to always do your research. Don’t read something in a magazine and take it as gospel. (or even this post - feel free to ask me questions!!) Choose your sources for the information that will go into making every cell in your body very, VERY, carefully.

3 Symptoms with a lot to say about your Body

The more I read, the more fascinated I am by the human body. I’ve been reading up on nutritional deficiencies. That’s one of the pluses about what I do as a health coach - I guide my clients to their healthiest, fittest, best selves - and because there is no “one size fits all” solution I am constantly growing and learning. Nutritional deficiencies are very common in this country. You may ask how that is possible when such a large portion of the population is either obese or on their way to obese. It is because we consume ‘food-like substances’ that are lacking in the nutrients our bodies need to function properly. Most people consume chemicals, fillers, preservatives, etc that interfere with nutrient absorption and wreak havoc with our hormones and bodies.

The key to us being able to do something to better ourselves, and our bodies, is to know what signs to look for. There are a number of signs but I’m going to focus on these

Bags and/or Dark Circles under the Eyes - I know these are common, for some of us it might even be hereditary, but the expression of your genes can be ‘turned off’ and if that can be done with food all the better! Bags and dark circles indicate allergies or food intolerances. Most of us go most our lives unaware of food intolerances and allergies but they are definitely something one should explore. The most common foods that cause allergies/intolerances are dairy, wheat/gluten, corn, soy, peanuts and oranges.

Ridges & White Spots on Nails - indicate mineral deficiency, usually zinc. Dark leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains and high quality protein sources are essential to give your body the minerals it requires. Fresh shellfish, like oysters, satisfies your body’s zinc requirements. Pumpkin seeds, lentils and grass-fed beef are other quality sources of zinc.

Cold Hands - could indicate a deficiency in Magnesium, hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) or chronic fatigue. Thyroid issues are tricky to adequately diagnose and a lot of people often are left undiagnosed but the good news is that proper nutrition your body can heal. Foods that are rich in magnesium are dark leafy greens like spinach (always organic), pumpkin and squash seeds, beans and lentils, avocados and raw cacao powder. If you suspect hypothyroidism steam your cruciferous vegetables and remove all processed foods. If it’s chronic fatigue remove, all processed foods from your diet and eat a diet full of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables like kale, whole grains like quinoa and brown rice, replace dairy with almond/hemp milk, seeds like chia and flax and add raw cacao powder too!

These 3 symptoms may feel like a normal part of your life, so ‘normal’ that you don’t even notice it anymore and that’s the dangerous part. As a society we are becoming more and more accustomed to falling ill, whether it is a cold/flu/etc, but we don’t have to! We don’t have to feel lethargic and tired. Our skin doesn’t have to look dull. And I could go on but I think you get it. :) Your body will tell you what it needs, you just have to speak its language. By learning your body’s language you will have more energy and be better able to handle the ‘stresses’ in your life; you will be your healthiest, fittest and best self. Free yourself from your ailments, experience joy and enjoy your life. Health and total wellbeing isn’t a destination, it’s a journey and it can be one of the most enjoyable ones of your life!

10 Beautifying Foods for Radiant Skin

Who doesn’t want beautiful, clear skin?? Your skin is your largest organ and it can say a lot about what is going on within. It protects you from the environment and it is one of the organs through which toxins leave your body. Since all your body systems are interconnected it makes sense that when you eat well your various organs and systems improve.

When it comes to skin issues - eczema, acne, psoriasis, rosacea, rashes, dandruff etc - most of these can be traced to nutritional deficiencies and/or undiagnosed food sensitivities. This means that with some changes and introducing a few key nutrients you can resolve your skin issues. And the side effect?? The rest of your body will improve!! How’s that for a ‘side effect’?! Better than leaky bowels or any of the side effects that you’ll have read to you on a TV commercial for the latest medication. :)

Foods to Eat for Beautiful Skin

  1. Strawberries - organic, of course! (Strawberries are part of the Dirty Dozen) These delicious berries are loaded with vitamin C which is essential for repairing your skin and tissues. They also help flush out impurities and dead skin cells. Aim for 1-2 cups per day.

  3. Red peppers - organic! (Any foods you’re eating with the skin should be chemical-free) These guys are rich in vitamin E and beta-carotene protecting your skin from free-radical damage. Eat them raw or cooked.

  4. Greek Yogurt - regular, full fat, plain greek yogurt! (Anything that is 2% or fat-free has been processed, defeating what we’re aiming for.) The lactic acid and natural enzymes in greek yogurt help nourish the skin and your hair and nails! Its enzymes also promote a healthy digestive tract. A healthy gut equals a healthy body! Aim to make plain greek yogurt with some strawberries and blueberries your breakfast staple 4-5 days a week.

Their high protein and iron content help keep your skin healthy and also helps your hair and nails. Aim for having 2 eggs (yolk and all!), either scrambled or hard boiled, 3 times a week.

  6. Olive oil - rich in antioxidants and a healthy fat, olive oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory, nourishing your skin, hair and nails from within. You can also use it topically. DO NOT use it to cook! Olive oil has a low burn point, becoming rancid and potentially carcinogenic when heated.

  7. Coconut oil - a powerful anti-inflammatory and rich in healthy fats! It helps boost your metabolism and promotes healthy skin, hair and nails! Use this oil to cook! Or in your smoothies! You can even use it as a moisturizer for your skin or a mask for your hair!

The benefits of Omega 3s go beyond your hair, skin and nails - supporting heart health and your brain too! Eat salmon or a cold-water fatty-fish of your choice 3-4 times per week.

  9. Blueberries - have one of the highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruits. Always go organic. These little guys are rich in vitamin C, E, A, B complex and minerals like copper, iron, selenium and zinc. They have powerful anti-inflammatory properties helping skin remain healthy and youthful. Aim for 1-2 cups per day.

  10. Oysters - are rich in protein, omega 3s and zinc, which are essential for healthy skin, hair (and eyelash) growth and strong nails. They are also high in vitamin E which protects your skin (and other cells in your body). Eating oysters also benefits your heart and cardiovascular system, boosts your immunity and improve brain function. Eat 3-6 oysters a couple times a week.

What is clean eating??

There are many health “buzz” words that are being thrown about. There have been many of these circulating throughout the years. One that I am hearing a lot, of late, and find myself using, often is “Clean Eating”. But what exactly is clean eating?? A lot of people think they eat “healthy” but when we actually go through what they are eating we often find some unpleasant surprises. It may be challenging at times to find foods in as ‘whole’ and natural a form as possible but it is possible. And it is completely worth the effort!!

What is ‘clean eating’?

Clean eating means you only eat foods that

  1. healthy

  2. natural and

  3. clean.

“Natural” is a word that many food companies freely use on their labels even when the “foods” are far from being natural. When I use the word ‘Natural’ I mean the food is as close to the way it grew out of the ground or came from the animal as possible.

“Clean” means that the food is free from hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, herbicides, fungicides, additives, preservatives, genetically-modified organisms - basically anything that changes the food and how it would react in our bodies. Pesticides, hormones, chemicals are toxic to our bodies and create a host of problems and illnesses from hormonal imbalances to metabolic syndrome and various types of cancers. All the more reason for you to avoid them!

Foods that are natural and clean, fulfilling the above prerequisites, are truly healthy. Truly nourishing and healing for your body. Eating these foods will increase your energy levels, help you manage your stress better (because your hormones will be in balance) and encourage your body to release excess weight. A healthy body manifests other effects like better immunity and a more radiant appearance!

Clean Eating Food List

  • Lots and lots of organic fruits and vegetables

  • Local-grown fruits and vegetables, whenever possible

  • Grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, dairy and free-range poultry

  • Whole, unrefined grains

  • Gluten-free, unrefined grains

  • Drink ½ your body weight, in ounces, of water every day

  • Plant-based meals - where 50-75% of your meals are vegetables and unrefined grains and 25% is animal protein

  • Do not eat refined, processed carbohydrates, ‘fruit’ or ‘fruit and vegetable’ drinks, energy drinks, ‘diet’ drinks, sodas

  • Watch your sugar intake (1 tsp = 4 grams)

  • Eat healthy fats in the form of unsalted nuts, seeds, coconut, avocados and cold water fatty fish

  • Cook with coconut oil

  • Use extra virgin olive oil for salads, dressings/sauces - Do NOT cook with this oil

  • Use cooking methods like steaming, baking, grilling, broiling and light sauteeing

This is one ‘diet’ that works! It works because it isn’t about calorie restriction, starving yourself and depriving yourself but about learning what’s in your food, knowing where it comes from and keeping it as close to how mother nature made it as possible. Eliminate the chemicals and heavily processed ‘foods’ and you will eliminate your health problems. For those who are fortunate enough to not have health issues, this type of eating will improve your quality of life and keep you healthy, youthful and vibrant longer! Learn what works best in your body! Can you think of a better way to enjoy your life??

Better-than-Fried Chicken

1 cup Greek Yogurt

½ cup fresh parmesan cheese, shredded

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp cumin powder

1 tsp spanish paprika

1 tsp himalayan sea salt

½ tsp ground black pepper

1-1 ½ lbs organic chicken breasts

=> Mix the greek yogurt, parmesan cheese and spices together. Coat the organic chicken breasts in the mixture. Place on a baking pan and bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Enjoy!!

3 Things You Need from Your Breakfast

Let’s talk breakfast! I know I’ve been guilty of skipping this meal. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s done this. It’s easy to skip this meal!! You woke up late. You woke up ‘on time’ but are somehow running late. Getting the kids ready for school. Etc. There are many reasons why one would be tempted (or 'forced') to skip this meal. The thing is that there are many reason why breakfast is the most important meal of the day! And there are excellent reasons why you should NOT simply reach for a breakfast bar as you’re on the way out the door!!

3 Things You WANT & NEED

  1. You want to eat your breakfast!

  2. You want it to be healthy and nutritious.

  3. You want the least amount of chemicals and processed foods as part of your breakfast and your meals. (This means each item is to have 5 ingredients or less; a 4th grader should be able to pronounce and know what the ingredients are; and no ingredient should have more than 2 syllables.)

The reason you want and need the above?? Because your body has been fasting overnight and now that you are awake, your body has to kickstart everything: your brain, your heart and cardiovascular systems, your digestion etc. The better (in quality and nutrients) your breakfast, the better your body will function.

The benefits?? You’ll have more energy, a clearer and more focused mind and be able to maintain a healthy weight. Remember it is not about calorie counting. Diets in that sense - the calorie counting, the deprivation, the restrictions - don’t work. Learning how to eat and how to feed your body nutrient-rich foods? That works!

Breakfast Ideas

You can go with a couple hard boiled eggs and some fresh fruits and plain Greek yogurt (those 3 things could be your breakfast) or you can try something like these! Remember protein is important and so are whole grain carbs like steel cut oats, quinoa and amaranth. And always remember - if it says ‘whole grain’ on the box, it is NOT a whole grain.

Fall Raw Oatmeal with Flaxseeds

1 cup Irish Steel Cut Oats (or Oat Groats)

4 cups purified water (for soaking the oats)

2 cups purified water (or Almond/Coconut milk)

1 organic red apple, chopped

2 medjool dates, soaked (or soaked apricots)

1 tbsp flaxseeds

1 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon (add once ready to serve)

½ tsp Nutmeg (add once ready to serve)

=> Step 1 is to soak the Oats in 4 cups of water overnight. In a separate bowl, soak the dates. In the morning drain and rinse the oats & make sure the pits from the dates are removed. You can use the water used to soak the dates as part of the 2 cups you will use to prepare the oatmeal. Place the drained and rinsed oats and the rest of the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed for 20-25 seconds - until it reaches the desired consistency. Portion out the blended oats into a bowl and sprinkle with Ceylon Cinnamon and Nutmeg. Enjoy!
