The Truth About Cleanses

It’s January and there are many of you, out there in the world, rethinking your health habits and wanting to make some serious changes either for your health or because your favorite jeans don’t fit anymore! Both reasons are valid AND still, one is a more powerful motivator. Regardless of which camp you’re in I will share with you some tips to make your weight/inches lost sustainable. Why is it important for your weight-loss to be sustainable?? Because yo-yo dieting is terrible psychologically and physically. Both your body and mind can only take so much...and you want to maintain both happy and healthy! Don’t you??

Alright!! Let’s get to it!

Juice cleanses, Tea Cleanses, Master cleanses and Whatnot!!

In NYC, it’s cold as f*ck today!! I have a friend who’s doing a raw food cleanse for THE ENTIRE MONTH of January. Sounds great right?? It is AND it is NOT! A raw food cleanse can be a good break for your digestive tract but if you’re used to eating bagels, processed foods, soda and McDonald’s...it will be a BIG shock to your body (i.e. Not good) . Add to that your climate - if you’re in the dead of a cold winter, raw foods will make you feel EVEN colder. Raw foods have a cooling effect on the body. So it is best to start with something lighter (if you’re used to unhealthy “convenience” foods) or do this cleanse in the summertime..when the weather is nice and warm.

I encouraged my friend to add green teas and ginger teas liberally during her cleanse. Ginger has a warming effect on the body and is soothing to the digestive system!

The same thing applies to raw juice cleanses. But more importantly, you have to make sure you get a solid source of protein in!! These cleanses are lacking in protein, which is a basic building block for every cell in your body. People will often feel light headed, headaches, moody, irritable, unable to focus mentally or have weird cravings. I craved protein during this cleanse like a madwoman! It was insane!! What I should’ve known (and subsequently learned during my health coach training and certification, was that your body NEEDS protein.) Protein is a major building block and ESSENTIAL to your body. If your body doesn’t get protein from the food you eat, it will start taking it from your muscles..which is not a good thing.

The only proper cleanse I've found without chemicals, preservatives, additives; that is vegan/vegetarian friendly, and gives you a proper - pre-digested - vegan protein that allows you to eat certain foods to keep your energy up so you can go about your day without being an irate zombie is Purium’s 10 Day Transformation Cleanse. Check out this video for more information. If you’re inspired, you can get your 10 Day Transformation Cleanse here www.mypuriumgift.com Use the Gift Card Code BERADIANT to get $50 Off your cleanse.

If you want/need to start slow, which I completely recommend if you’re used to convenience foods. You want to do this!

Every morning drink a glass/mug of warm/very warm purified water with ½ organic lemon squeezed in.

Follow that up with this *every* morning after your warm lemon water:

During Week 1 - 1 tbsp organic ground flaxseeds in ½ cup organic kefir

During Week 2 - 2 tbsp organic ground flaxseeds in ½ cup organic kefir

During Week 3 - 3 tbsp organic ground flaxseeds in ½ cup organic kefir

The combination will hydrate your body and start cleansing your gut and replenishing to good/healthy bacteria that supports the proper digestion of foods and assimilation of vitamins and minerals.

Cleanses can be a great tool to help get you start being more aware of your body and how certain foods react with your unique body. However, it is NOT normal to feel irate, moody, lightheaded, etc!! So please be careful with your cleanses people! You’re supposed to feel energetic and uplifted because you're letting go of excess pounds and inches as a by-product of getting healthier! That’s right I said it!!!! Losing weight/inches should be a by-product of making healthier choices in your food and lifestyle. Join my revolution and live happily and joyfully!! (AND lose weight/inches) xxA

3 Things You Need from Your Breakfast

Let’s talk breakfast! I know I’ve been guilty of skipping this meal. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s done this. It’s easy to skip this meal!! You woke up late. You woke up ‘on time’ but are somehow running late. Getting the kids ready for school. Etc. There are many reasons why one would be tempted (or 'forced') to skip this meal. The thing is that there are many reason why breakfast is the most important meal of the day! And there are excellent reasons why you should NOT simply reach for a breakfast bar as you’re on the way out the door!!

3 Things You WANT & NEED

  1. You want to eat your breakfast!

  2. You want it to be healthy and nutritious.

  3. You want the least amount of chemicals and processed foods as part of your breakfast and your meals. (This means each item is to have 5 ingredients or less; a 4th grader should be able to pronounce and know what the ingredients are; and no ingredient should have more than 2 syllables.)

The reason you want and need the above?? Because your body has been fasting overnight and now that you are awake, your body has to kickstart everything: your brain, your heart and cardiovascular systems, your digestion etc. The better (in quality and nutrients) your breakfast, the better your body will function.

The benefits?? You’ll have more energy, a clearer and more focused mind and be able to maintain a healthy weight. Remember it is not about calorie counting. Diets in that sense - the calorie counting, the deprivation, the restrictions - don’t work. Learning how to eat and how to feed your body nutrient-rich foods? That works!

Breakfast Ideas

You can go with a couple hard boiled eggs and some fresh fruits and plain Greek yogurt (those 3 things could be your breakfast) or you can try something like these! Remember protein is important and so are whole grain carbs like steel cut oats, quinoa and amaranth. And always remember - if it says ‘whole grain’ on the box, it is NOT a whole grain.

Fall Raw Oatmeal with Flaxseeds

1 cup Irish Steel Cut Oats (or Oat Groats)

4 cups purified water (for soaking the oats)

2 cups purified water (or Almond/Coconut milk)

1 organic red apple, chopped

2 medjool dates, soaked (or soaked apricots)

1 tbsp flaxseeds

1 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon (add once ready to serve)

½ tsp Nutmeg (add once ready to serve)

=> Step 1 is to soak the Oats in 4 cups of water overnight. In a separate bowl, soak the dates. In the morning drain and rinse the oats & make sure the pits from the dates are removed. You can use the water used to soak the dates as part of the 2 cups you will use to prepare the oatmeal. Place the drained and rinsed oats and the rest of the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed for 20-25 seconds - until it reaches the desired consistency. Portion out the blended oats into a bowl and sprinkle with Ceylon Cinnamon and Nutmeg. Enjoy!

Berry-Chia Pudding

1 cup Almond milk, organic (can use Coconut/Flax/Hemp milk)

¼ cup chia seeds

½ tsp vanilla extract

¼ cup organic blueberries

¼ cup organic strawberries, sliced

¼ cup organic almonds, chopped

=>Step 1 is to soak the Chia seeds in the 1 cup of Almond milk overnight - covered and in the refrigerator. You can also soak them for 1 hour, if you are able to do that in the morning. In the morning, remove from the refrigerator and add the remaining ingredients. Feel free to experiment with adding other fruits. Stir well and enjoy!

Boost Energy & Rejuvenate your Body with Maca

I first heard about Maca during a presentation on Raw Foods by David Wolfe at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. As a result, I started reading up on superfoods in David Wolfe's book "Superfoods" and I incorporated Maca into my morning smoothies. I immediately noticed that on the days when I would make my smoothies with maca I would feel more focused and energetic. I also noticed that I was calmer, even in the face of the day to day stresses of life. I was handling things much better (which for a 'fiery' Latina is a good thing :)). Noticing the first hand results I started feeding my boyfriend maca too & I started telling my mom about it. Gotta spread the good news right??

What is Maca??

It’s a root that has been cultivated in the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes for around 2,600 years. It is found in the most barren and inhospitable part of the Andes, which gives the root its character and properties. The ancient warriors of the Amazon jungle domesticated maca and later the warriors of the Inca empire would eat this root before entering battle in order to make them stronger and increase their stamina; after battle these warriors were prohibited from using maca, to protect the women from ‘excessive sexual desires of men’.

Maca has been used, medicinally, in South America to enhance fertility in humans and animals for centuries. Maca is a superfood that is categorized as an adaptogen, ‘which means it has the ability to balance and stabilize the body’s glandular-hormonal system, nervous system, cardiovascular system and musculature.’1 Maca boosts the immune system, increases stamina and energy, increases oxygen in the blood, supports the thyroid, endocrine system and the adrenals and it increases fertility and libido. That’s a lot of information..I know. But what is most important for you to take away from that is that it heals your body on all levels, allowing it to adapt to the stresses of modern life, keeping  you younger and healthier, longer. There is so much more I want to share with you but for the sake of brevity I will tell you this: It is rich in many vitamins and minerals and improves a variety of conditions.

Look for Maca in the following forms:

  • Dried, powdered maca root

  • Dried, powdered maca root capsules

  • Maca varieties are black, yellow, red

  • Dried superfood formulas containing maca

  • Maca chocolate bars, treats and energy bars

  • Liquid maca concentrates

  • Roasted Maca

How to use Maca?

You can use maca in your smoothies, in capsule form, in your favorite tea or nut milk or coffee, even as part of a raw dessert or dish. It is very versatile and is a great emulsifier too. Just be sure to start with small amounts - 1 tablespoon a day is a good start.

Rejuvenating Smoothie

1 cup unsweetened almond milk, organic

1 cup goji purified water (include the berries)**

1 cup blueberries

½ packet organic Açaí, frozen

1 tbsp organic coconut oil

1 tbsp raw maca powder

1 tsp goji berry powder (optional)

1 tsp camu-camu powder (optional)

**Bring purified water to a boil and toss in 2 tbsp of goji berries and allow to cool.

Place ingredients in blender and mix thoroughly. Serve and enjoy!

So Many Reasons...to Use RAW Apple Cider Vinegar

I’ve been hearing about the myriad of benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for awhile now but only recently have I started really paying attention and experimenting with it in my day to day. I have to say I really like the benefits!

Oh, before I get into it, just be sure that your Apple Cider Vinegar is RAW. Your bottle has to contain the ‘mother of the vinegar’ which is what gives the healing properties to ACV. So remember, RAW and “mother of the vinegar”. If it is clear, filtered, processed it loses its healing properties!

Back to the healing properties! Did you know you can use it to make your hair shiny, clear up acne and soothe a sunburn?? I knew the hair thing but not the other two! These are just a few of the benefits. I use it as mouthwash pre-brushing to kill off bacteria and whiten my chompers. This will loosen up any mucus in your sinuses which is awesome!! Because it helps relieve allergies and keeps sinus infections away (which I used to get several times a year!!). I sip it in purified water to keep my body’s pH balanced - this increases my energy levels and protects me from illness - and to keep my waistline trim - especially now that bikini season is upon us!

Some Benefits of ACV?

  • Aid in weight-loss - studies have shown that the acetic acid, found in raw ACV, reduces abdominal fat, inches around your waist, weight and triglycerides (which contribute to bad cholesterol).

  • Boosts energy by balancing your body’s pH levels - when your body is too acidic (lower pH levels) it can be more prone to infections and a variety of illnesses and have low energy levels which ACV helps reverse. Raw ACV helps the body maintain a healthy alkaline environment.

  • Useful in Detoxification - Raw ACV helps break up mucus throughout the body (which can help with allergies, sinus congestion and even sinus infections), helps stimulate cardiovascular circulation and detoxify your liver.

  • Relieving arthritis pain - the potassium in ACV works to prevent calcium build-up in your joints, which has been linked to joint stiffness.

  • Improve bone health - ACV is rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium and other minerals which are for maintaining your bones.

  • Whiter Teeth - ACV helps remove stains, kills bacteria in your mouth and along the gumline. Just gargle with it in the morning and then brush your teeth as usual.

How to use ACV??

You can add Raw Apple Cider Vinegar to your salads, or your salad dressing, even in your smoothies! Be sure to check out my recipe for a great fat burning drink using ACV.

  • For helping alkalinize your body, weight loss and maintenance you can add 1 tablespoon of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, before your meals.

  • For treating acute conditions like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, sore throat you can add 2 tablespoons of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, after your meals

Fat Burning & Detoxifying Drink

16 oz purified water

2 tbsp Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, organic (**make sure it is RAW and has the ‘mother of the vinegar’ in it**)

½ organic lemon, squeezed (can use 1 whole lemon)

1 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon, ground

1 tsp raw honey (optional)

Mix with a spoon and drink to your health!

Why you should get to know Turmeric

There are many roots and spices that have been used for thousands of years, staples of the Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese medicinal practices. Modern science is now verifying what has been known by ancient societies for millenia. One of these is Turmeric. It is a root spice that is used in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking. Turmeric is even used in Latin American cooking! Peruvian cooking uses it in native dishes such as Papa a la Huancaina and Aji de Gallina, two of my favorite dishes! Turmeric is the underground stem of a ginger-like plant. When you find it fresh it looks like a smaller, thinner cousin of the ginger root, only with a bright yellow orange interior. Powdered turmeric is bright yellow.

I love using Turmeric in my cooking. It adds a warm and aromatic flavor. Just be careful not to go overboard with the Turmeric because it can add unwanted bitterness when used in excess.

Why use Turmeric??

  • Powerful antioxidants - this is especially important considering how many chemicals we are exposed to, our cells and DNA need every bit of protection!

  • Potent anti-inflammatory - prolonged inflammation in the body leads to chronic illnesses, heart disease, arthritis, neurological illnesses etc. Raw turmeric is best for this purpose.

How to use Turmeric??

  1. Raw - in homemade dressings, sprinkling it on vegetables and in your smoothies/juices

  2. Cooked - it is a delicious spice on chicken, fish, beef, tofu, even on brown rice and quinoa. Get creative!

It can even be used topically for a sun-kissed glow but that is for another post! :)

Turmeric Dressing

½ cup extra virgin olive oil, organic

2 organic lemons, juiced and zest

½ avocado, organic

3 garlic cloves, organic

Turmeric root, fresh, thumbnail size

1 tbsp raw honey

Himalayan sea salt, to taste

Blend all ingredients in a blender and enjoy!

Sunny Salmon

1 lb wild coho salmon, fillet

1 organic onion, sliced

4 organic garlic cloves, crushed

1 bunch organic scallions, diced

1 tbsp turmeric powder

1 tbsp himalayan sea salt

1 tsp black pepper

1 tbsp organic tamari (gluten-free soy sauce)

2 tbsp organic coconut oil

1 cup purified water

Start by heating the coconut oil in a sautee pan over medium heat. Add the garlic (after letting it stand for 15 minutes to allow all the enzymes to be fully active), onions, scallions with ½ tbsp of sea salt and allow it to cook until the onions are translucent. Add the remaining spices and stir well. Place the salmon in the pan, allow each side to cook for 2-3 minutes and then add water and cover. Allow to cook covered for 10-15 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

Enjoy the recipes and feel free to experiment with this delicious spice! Get creative with Turmeric and allow it to infuse your body with its healing energies!

Cravings?? Here's the why & what to do about them!

If you are like me there are times when your cravings get the best of you! I used to feel like crap when I ‘fell off the wagon’ and gave in to my cravings. That was before I knew that the cravings actually meant something! It turns out that our bodies have cravings in order to let us know that we require certain vitamins and minerals. Our bodies are very sophisticated and reliable organisms. What we need to demystify is the meaning behind our cravings.

So here’s what we need to know about our cravings!

Craving Sweets??

Human beings naturally crave sweet flavors. Craving sweets means that our bodies need energy. Sugars are carbohydrates and these can be simple or complex. Simple carbs are turned into sugar rather quickly in our bodies while complex carbs are released slower. Sugar (or glucose) is fuel for your body’s cells. The way to keep this craving from ruining your weight loss goals and your health, in the long run, is to reduce processed foods and increase your grains and vegetables. **Extra sugar is stored as fat which is why complex carbs are the way to go! The grains and veggies will give your body the energy it needs to take you through your day! If you’re still craving candy bars etc, eat these instead:

  • Rice cakes and rice syrup

  • Fruits - berries, apples, pineapples

  • Carrots

Craving Chocolate??

I love chocolate! I love chocolate!! I’m sure some of you share my feeling. The thing with chocolate is that most of what passes for chocolate is super high in sugar and chemical additives and low in quality. It is no longer real chocolate. When your body is craving chocolate it is telling you it needs Magnesium. Instead of reaching for that Snickers, eat these:

  • High quality, organic chocolate bars (60% cacao or higher). A brand I enjoy is Dagoba.

  • Add raw cacao powder (which is real, unprocessed chocolate) to your morning yogurt or smoothie.

  • Raw nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits will also give your body the magnesium it needs.

Craving Oily, Fatty Foods??

A common craving especially after a night out when I’ve been enjoying some champagne with friends! Your body is telling you it needs some high quality essential fatty acids and calcium. I find myself enjoying some of these foods:

  • Avocados - I love these!! They are tasty and have quality, healthy fats and amino acids.

  • Mustard & turnip greens, broccoli, kale, legumes, cheese and sesame seeds - I am partial to kale and broccoli. These greens are great sources of calcium. I usually make a nice smoothie with spinach, kale, blueberries, strawberries and organic coconut oil.

Craving Salty Foods??

Another common craving! When we are craving salty snacks or foods our bodies are trying to tell us that it is lacking minerals. Most people’s diets are lacking in minerals because most of the foods we eat are highly processed and loaded with chemicals. Instead of reach for a salty snack, eat these first:

  • Leafy green vegetables like spinach, swiss chard, kale, collard greens - these are very high in the vitamins and minerals your body is craving.

  • Use a high quality sea salt like celtic sea salt or himalayan sea salt - these contain many trace minerals that your body needs.

  • Add some sea vegetables to your beans - this will add some savoriness to your dish and will increase the mineral content.

There are other cravings but these are some of the most common and therefore useful for our day to day. Our bodies are wonderful, complex systems that know exactly what they need to look great and give us the energy we need to conquer our tasks! It is up to us to get to know our bodies and learn its language. When we understand what our bodies are telling us we will enjoy better health, abundant energy and age subtly and gracefully! Next time you having a craving ask yourself what is it that you really need. Treat your body like the temple it is and honor your divine self!

Beat Spring Allergies with Raw Honey

It’s (finally!!) Springtime!! The weather is beginning to warm up and with it the trees, grasses and flowers will start to bloom. For those of us who suffer from seasonal allergies this is not the best time of year. Itchy, watery eyes. Runny nose. Congestion. Endless sneezing. You know the symptoms! I definitely know the symptoms!! Every spring (and fall), like clockwork, I would come down with a nasty case of seasonal allergies which would sometimes progress into sinus infections. Thankfully, I discovered some changes I could make to my diet and lifestyle that would be the best thing that ever happened to me.

I have always loved honey. I always chose honey over sugar when sweetening my tea. What I didn’t know is that most mass-produced honey is processed and that the healing properties have been stripped because of this. Honey is one of the world’s most healing foods. It is anti-aging. Anti-bacterial. Rich in minerals and enzymes. Honey boosts immunity! Bee produced foods are the only foods that will never spoil!!

But for you to enjoy the benefits of honey - it has to be RAW! Unfiltered. Unprocessed. Wild. Organic.

When I switched to real, raw honey it completely changed my relationship with Spring. Allergies no longer plagued me. All it took was a little raw honey in my morning smoothie or in my tea. Just let the tea be at a drinkable temperature before you add the honey. Raw honey also has B vitamins, which helps us manage stress better, helps clear up acne and helps us maintain a wrinkle-free complexion longer!

If you’re like me and exercise regularly, adding bee pollen to your diet will help increase endurance, strength, energy and speed. It also increases muscle growth and definition! When buying bee pollen, choose either fresh or bee pollen that has been dried at 96 degrees or less in order to retain all of its nutritional value. **Just be sure to start with ¼ teaspoon and build from there. You can add bee pollen to your smoothie or your morning oatmeal or any other drink. Or you can be daring and just eat your ¼ teaspoon of it straight!

Beauty Smoothie

2 ½ cups purified water/coconut water

1 cup organic blueberries, frozen

½ cup organic mango, frozen

½ cup organic strawberries, frozen

¼ cup organic goji berries, dried

1 tbsp organic raw cacao powder

½ tbsp organic honey, raw

½ tbsp bee pollen (if new to bee pollen, ¼ tsp)

**Blend and serve! This is a perfect for breakfast or pre-workout.

Gluten-free?? or Not Gluten-free??

A couple Mondays ago now, I decided I was going to really give this whole Gluten-free thing a proper try. I have noticed that when I eat products with Gluten – a protein found in certain grains – wheat is one of the most common sources of Gluten in our diets nowadays - I feel sluggish, bloated, my brain just has this numb feeling, I wake up with less energy & just have this EH feeling.. As you can see these are not good signs! I am an actress & a health & wellness coach, so it is my responsibility to look great & tend to my body & mind properly & from there support others in doing the same. All week I was doing great! & feeling great! I woke up without that tired, sluggish…will someone please turn off the daylight…feeling! I had more energy. I ate my greens. I had some lean proteins. I had some healthy grains such as brown rice & quinoa. & I got things done! Until the weekend… I started craving pizza!! & I’m a New Yorker so there is nothing like a pizza craving for us. But you can substitute this with your favorite source of gluten ;) And I gave in – to this delicious artisanal pizza spot. The pizza was delicious. I loved every bite of it!! Until…I woke up this past Monday morning.  I woke up feeling tired & like my brain was numb. I felt lethargic & without much energy to do anything. All I could think was why on earth did I eat that pizza!?? Now I have to get back on the ‘wagon’ & eat my greens & healthy – GLUTEN FREE grains, lean proteins… It is back to the drawing board!!

Now, I don’t believe that so called “gluten-free” foods that have an ingredient list that is a mile long, with words you can’t pronounce (or even some you can pronounce) is a good thing either!! ALWAYS read your ingredient list!!  If it lists potato starch, corn starch, tapioca starch, rice starch (see a pattern ;) or xanthum gum. STAY AWAY!! These ingredients are highly processed. They make the 'gluten-free' whatever-it-is high in sugar, lacking in nutrients & to add insult to injury, high on the Glycemic Index. This means that your body breaks them down very quickly; which leads to a spike in your blood sugar that is followed by a sharp drop. You want to eat foods that are low on the Glycemic Index – so your body breaks them down over time – making you feel satisfied longer, evening out your mood & keeping your energy up.

Don’t fall into the marketing trap!! There are tons of companies out there that are supposedly ‘healthy’ but in reality aren’t. Case in point – Naked Juices. They are currently being sued because their juices aren’t really ‘natural’ or healthy. They are loaded with GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), soy derived fillers, lots of sugar etc.  Read the labels & do your research

Look at the sugar content! 1 teaspoon = 4.2 grams

Here are some grains that are naturally Gluten-free:

  1. Brown rice
  2. Quinoa
  3. Amaranth
  4. Oats (just make sure they are whole oats, uncontaminated)
  5. Teff
  6. Sorghum
  7. Millet
  8. Buckwheat
  9. Cornmeal, whole grain (not cornstarch)
  10. Popcorn (organic & non-GMO)
  11. Montina (Indian Rice Grass)

You may not have heard of some of these. I have never heard of Montina!! But MOST of them are easy to find. You can start with oats, quinoa, brown rice & popcorn & then move on to Amaranth, millet, buckwheat, etc as you get more comfortable! It's a process :)

I started with these recipes & they are delicious!! Eat up!

Quinoa Breakfast Porridge

1 cup Almond milk, unsweetened *

½ cup quinoa

½ berries (fresh or frozen)

¼ tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp agave nectar (optional)

Bring the almond milk & quinoa to a light boil. If you are using frozen berries ‘cook’ the berries with the quinoa. Once you bring it to a light boil, reduce heat to a low simmer & cover saucepan with its lid. Simmer for ~15 minutes or until the quinoa has the desired amount of almond milk left. Remove from heat & mix in the cinnamon & agave (optional) & the berries, if fresh.

* I use unsweetened almond milk because I want it to have as little added to it as possible. If I have time I will make my own almond milk – but I admit, I don’t usually have the time to make my own. If you want to add 1 tsp of true Vanilla extract feel free to do so.

Raw Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

1 ¼ cups whole oat groats or steel cut oats

1 ½ cups almond milk, unsweetened (or purified water)

1 organic apple, chopped

1 tbsp organic raisins

¼ tsp cinnamon

**Place the oats in the milk/water with the raisins & let them soak overnight.

In the morning, add the chopped apple & blend in your food processor/blender/vitamix until smooth. Sprinkle the cinnamon & more raisins, if desired.
