The Truth About Cleanses

It’s January and there are many of you, out there in the world, rethinking your health habits and wanting to make some serious changes either for your health or because your favorite jeans don’t fit anymore! Both reasons are valid AND still, one is a more powerful motivator. Regardless of which camp you’re in I will share with you some tips to make your weight/inches lost sustainable. Why is it important for your weight-loss to be sustainable?? Because yo-yo dieting is terrible psychologically and physically. Both your body and mind can only take so much...and you want to maintain both happy and healthy! Don’t you??

Alright!! Let’s get to it!

Juice cleanses, Tea Cleanses, Master cleanses and Whatnot!!

In NYC, it’s cold as f*ck today!! I have a friend who’s doing a raw food cleanse for THE ENTIRE MONTH of January. Sounds great right?? It is AND it is NOT! A raw food cleanse can be a good break for your digestive tract but if you’re used to eating bagels, processed foods, soda and McDonald’s...it will be a BIG shock to your body (i.e. Not good) . Add to that your climate - if you’re in the dead of a cold winter, raw foods will make you feel EVEN colder. Raw foods have a cooling effect on the body. So it is best to start with something lighter (if you’re used to unhealthy “convenience” foods) or do this cleanse in the summertime..when the weather is nice and warm.

I encouraged my friend to add green teas and ginger teas liberally during her cleanse. Ginger has a warming effect on the body and is soothing to the digestive system!

The same thing applies to raw juice cleanses. But more importantly, you have to make sure you get a solid source of protein in!! These cleanses are lacking in protein, which is a basic building block for every cell in your body. People will often feel light headed, headaches, moody, irritable, unable to focus mentally or have weird cravings. I craved protein during this cleanse like a madwoman! It was insane!! What I should’ve known (and subsequently learned during my health coach training and certification, was that your body NEEDS protein.) Protein is a major building block and ESSENTIAL to your body. If your body doesn’t get protein from the food you eat, it will start taking it from your muscles..which is not a good thing.

The only proper cleanse I've found without chemicals, preservatives, additives; that is vegan/vegetarian friendly, and gives you a proper - pre-digested - vegan protein that allows you to eat certain foods to keep your energy up so you can go about your day without being an irate zombie is Purium’s 10 Day Transformation Cleanse. Check out this video for more information. If you’re inspired, you can get your 10 Day Transformation Cleanse here www.mypuriumgift.com Use the Gift Card Code BERADIANT to get $50 Off your cleanse.

If you want/need to start slow, which I completely recommend if you’re used to convenience foods. You want to do this!

Every morning drink a glass/mug of warm/very warm purified water with ½ organic lemon squeezed in.

Follow that up with this *every* morning after your warm lemon water:

During Week 1 - 1 tbsp organic ground flaxseeds in ½ cup organic kefir

During Week 2 - 2 tbsp organic ground flaxseeds in ½ cup organic kefir

During Week 3 - 3 tbsp organic ground flaxseeds in ½ cup organic kefir

The combination will hydrate your body and start cleansing your gut and replenishing to good/healthy bacteria that supports the proper digestion of foods and assimilation of vitamins and minerals.

Cleanses can be a great tool to help get you start being more aware of your body and how certain foods react with your unique body. However, it is NOT normal to feel irate, moody, lightheaded, etc!! So please be careful with your cleanses people! You’re supposed to feel energetic and uplifted because you're letting go of excess pounds and inches as a by-product of getting healthier! That’s right I said it!!!! Losing weight/inches should be a by-product of making healthier choices in your food and lifestyle. Join my revolution and live happily and joyfully!! (AND lose weight/inches) xxA

5 Metabolism Boosting Foods

Let’s face it, one of the first things to go as one ‘ages’ is your metabolism. It’s one of the main complaints I hear when clients come to see me! Some people have abused their body through pills, prescription or otherwise, crazy diets, junk food (a.k.a - processed foods) etc. Other people have - inadvertently - done damage to their bodies by eating foods that are supposedly ‘healthy’ - i.e. non-fat, low fat, sugar-free, zero calorie, fat free etc.

The good news?? You can heal your body! You can get your metabolism (and yourself) back into ‘fighting’ shape! That is the wonderful and miraculous thing about your body - it is fully capable of healing itself.

Your mission - should you choose to accept it - is to provide your body with the fuel it needs which is nutrient-dense nourishment. Foods that are whole and unprocessed, free from antibiotics, hormones and pesticides are what you should seek out in order to restore your body to optimum health and wellbeing.

Metabolism Boosting Foods

  1. Red Beans - dried, red beans have a lot of fiber that help keep you fuller, longer and help you store less fat and B vitamins and zinc. They also contain a ‘resistant’ starch that helps repair the lining of your intestine and has been shown to help lower insulin levels. => Be sure to soak them for 6-8 hours in room temperature water before cooking.

  2. Garlic & Onions - work to stimulate production of glutathione, a master antioxidant. Glutathione is helpful on many levels but one of the most important ones is that it helps the liver remove hormone-disrupting chemicals from the body. Garlic is also helpful in lowering overall cholesterol and raising the good cholesterol.

  3. Broccoli & Cauliflower - cruciferous vegetables like these are nutrient-rich and low in calories. The high water and fiber content help keeps you satisfied and works to increase your body’s fat burning capabilities. => Do not overcook these - you want them to retain some firmness - in order to retain their nutrients. Steam or sautee lightly.

  4. Green Tea - overusing caffeine can damage one’s metabolism and cause hormonal imbalances so switch from coffee to green tea. Green tea has tons of antioxidants, boosts fat metabolism and has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. => Do not consume more than 400 mg of caffeine per day (roughly 2 strong, 8 oz cups of coffee). Finish your last cup prior to 12pm (it has a long half-life) so your body can digest it by the time bedtime rolls around.

  5. Strawberries & Raspberries - are not only a good way to curb that sweet tooth but are also loaded with nutrients and antioxidants like anthocyanins, which some studies have shown to stop individual fat cells from getting larger. In addition, they also cause fat cells to release release adiponectin, which reduces inflammation, helps reverse insulin and leptin resistance and helps lower blood sugar levels. =>Always go organic when it comes to berries. Choose fresh or frozen. Never processed or in processed foods.

Action Plan

Start by swapping out some of the foods you eat with these and you will soon see and feel the difference. Work on avoiding processed and packaged foods. Replace sweetened drinks and juices with water.

In our society that is overly obsessed with physical ‘beauty’ it may seem counterintuitive to say this but I am going to say it anyway! Your physique is only one aspect of your health! And it is the least important!! How you feel - that’s what matters. Not every one of us is meant to be a size 2. But we can ALL look our personal best and feel amazing!!  Want to learn more about boosting your metabolism?? Register for my upcoming Pre-Holiday Metabolism Boost Webinar

Obsessed with the ## on the scale??

As I embarked on my journey to being healthy, I tried just about every cleanse and diet out there under the mistaken belief that the number on the scale is what mattered. The more I learned, the more I changed my eating and lifestyle habits but more importantly I learned how to listen to what my body needed and how to love my body. That is what I show my clients, friends and family how to do.

It isn’t about the number on the scale. You can be skinny and unhealthy. There are people that have the ‘appearance’ of being physically fit, they are active, look good but they get a heart attack at a relatively young age. I’m sure some of you have heard about this happening and have been puzzled by it. I know I was! There are people that are heavier and their doctors say they are A-Ok. And then there are the people that are people that have metabolic disorders, diabetes or pre-diabetes, cardiovascular issues etc. Disease is a continuum - this is one of the major points I took away from one of my lectures during my training to become a health coach. Therefore, it is important to develop healthy habits. How you nourish your body every meal and every day matters.

Some things you can start implementing now:

  1. Swap sodas, energy drinks and ‘juices’ with water. Aim for drinking ½ your body weight in ounces every day.

  2. Look at the sugar content in what you drink and eat. 4 grams = 1 teaspoon Choose foods and drinks with little or no added sugars.

  3. Go for fresh fruits and vegetables. ½ your plate in greens and/or veggies. Fruits can be a healthy snack.

  4. Choose healthy proteins - antibiotic-free, hormone-free, free-range, grass fed. Eating protein fills you and helps your body build lean muscle. More lean muscle means your body burns more fat and calories.

  5. Eat healthy fats - nuts like almonds and walnuts, seeds like flax, sunflower, chia seeds. Cook in coconut oil and use Extra Virgin olive oil for salads.

  6. Eliminate refined carbohydrates and processed foods. Anything that is low-fat, no-fat, sugar-free etc has chemicals. The chemicals in refined and processed foods encourage your body to store fat, creates hormonal imbalances among other unhealthy effects.

There is a ton of information out there about the food supply and the effects of artificial chemicals and additives have on the body. If I got into it you might get bored but I gave a quick insight on the ‘why’ and ‘how’ when it comes to creating a healthy relationship with the food that nourishes your body. Remember that what works for one person doesn’t work for another. Healthy eating is a very individualized thing. So experiment, research and start implementing the tips above. Pretty soon you will be enjoying the benefits of having, and maintaining, a healthy weight, increasing your energy levels and creating harmony and balance in your life. And you will enjoy good health and an improved quality of life. How does it get better than that??

Can You Lose Weight While You Sleep??

There are many reasons that you should get enough sleep but did you know that it lack of sleep could be the reason you have a hard time losing weight?? When you sleep your body rejuvenates itself and is burning calories, which are good things as long as you are getting sufficient, quality sleep. According to a study, people who are sleep deprived consume 300 more calories per day than those who are well-rested. So sleep deprivation can cause you to gain 30 lbs during the course of a year. Lack of sleep increases food cravings, raises the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, and slows your metabolism. As if that wasn’t enough bad news, people who are sleep deprived also produce more ghrelin - a hormone that increases hunger.

As I’m reading about sleep and your waistline and all the hormones that get out of whack with sleep deprivation I am reminding myself to get more sleep. The last few months have been non-stop for me and  upon reflection I realize that I haven’t been making sure I sleep a good 8 hours every night. Sometimes I’ve been kept awake by my To-Do list and at others times I’ve been anxious about what I have to do the next day. I’m sure you guys can relate! :)

The goal is to sleep 7-8 hours every night. Every night. Every night. I’m repeating that part to emphasize its importance because you can’t ‘catch up’ on sleep over the weekend. Your body doesn’t work that way. So. Say it with me - Every night.

These tips I’m about to share with you will help get you relaxed and ready for a restful night’s sleep.

  1. Figure out your optimal bedtime by counting back 8 hours from the time you have to wake up.

  2. Now that you know what time you should be going to bed - start preparing for bed by turning off the computer, stop responding to emails/texts, getting off of social media, dimming the lights and turning off the TV. I know this sounds ‘extreme’ but the glare from all these screens keeps your mind up and going which is the opposite of what you want at this time. Allow yourself a break from all these distractions and put your rest first!

  3. Taking a warm bath could be a good way to unwind - add some epsom salts and lavender essential oil for a soothing boost.

  4. Sprinkle some Lavender essential oil to your pillows and sheets. Lavender is soothing and encourages a restful sleep.

  5. Drink some hot tea before bed - like Chamomile, Valerian, Passion Flower Kava-Kava or Lavender.

Creating a bedtime ritual is a great way to create an environment where your body feels it can rest. My personal favorite is the turning off and tuning out of all the electronic devices. I admit I’m not always on point with this one but I have noticed that when I don’t take my work or social media to bed it is easier for me to fall asleep. Keep in mind that we are habitual creatures - so it may take some time to get these suggestions into your routine. Be patient and stick with it! Then you’ll be enjoying the benefits of good sleep - a healthier immune system, clearer complexion, fewer cravings and weight-loss!

6 Fat Burning Foods

The one thing that all my clients have in common, be they male or female, is that they are looking to lose fat. The extra pouch they are carrying around? They want it gone! Like, yesterday!! Now, they want their extra inches gone for aesthetic reasons but there are some important health reasons to get rid of those inches of excess.

Having excess fat around the mid-section has been correlated to higher occurrences of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. It is a sign of chronic inflammation and that is not good for your health and wellbeing. As if your health is not enough of an incentive to lose those excess pounds and inches, a strong & fit core also protects you from injuries that may occur during the course of your daily routine, strengthens your back and improves your sex life! How’s that for motivation? That certainly got me motivated and since I changed my diet and lifestyle I lost a good 4 inches around my waist. And I’ve maintained it! How much can you lose?

To get your started, here are some foods whose intake you should increase in order to release the extra weight and inches.

  1. Green Tea - I’m sure you’ve heard that green tea is good for you. It contains antioxidants, catechins, that can stimulate metabolism and stimulate the body to burn abdominal fat.

  2. Greek Yogurt - packed with protein which takes your body longer to digest keeping you satisfied longer. A bonus is that your body burns more calories while digesting protein than carbs. Stick to plain yogurt and use fresh berries or a little raw honey to sweeten it but avoid flavored greek yogurt.

  3. Quinoa - is a gluten-free grain that has 8 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber in a one cup serving. Loaded with vitamins and minerals it is nutritious and satisfying; and can be eaten with lean protein or as part of an arugula salad.

  4. Raw Vegetables - cucumbers, carrots, celery, broccoli, peppers make a great snack that keeps your tummy full and happy and is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that give your body the nutrition it needs. And they are crunchy, so choose to snack on these instead of chips. Add a little sea salt, olive oil and cayenne pepper or some almond butter for some added taste.

  5. Organic Eggs - low in calories and a good source of high-quality protein. Studies have shown that eating protein in the morning will help keep you full longer vs. a carb-heavy breakfast, making it less likely for you to reach for a mid-morning snack.

  6. Berries - are high in water and fiber keeping you satisfied and they will also satisfy your sweet tooth for a fraction of the calories of cookies or brownies! The added benefit is that they are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients.

I would eat one of these first, before you eat your ‘regular’ meal, or you can start by replacing one of your meals with a combination of these foods. Get creative. Experiment! And enjoy yourself!

Berry Kale Smoothie

1 organic kale leaf, center stalk removed

½ organic blueberries

½ organic strawberries

1 tbsp Pure Synergy Green Superfood Powder

1 tbsp coconut oil

2 cups purified water (add more/less depending on your taste)

Blend well and bottoms up!

Day 1 of my 10-Day Transformation

I came across these great products that I’ve been guiding a few of my clients through. A cleanse. A solid cleanse that has no chemicals or fillers, is organic and vegan-friendly, and actually helps your body build lean muscle while losing fat. After seeing the results of my clients I decided to give it a try for myself. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a cleanse. And I’ve done just about every ‘cleanse’ out there - raw, vegan, juicing, grapefruit cleanse, master cleanse, etc. And those cleanses never worked for me. I usually didn’t lose any weight and I was a pain-in-the-rear to deal with!! Not a good combo.

Until I came across this cleanse. Purium. (Feel free to do your homework! :)

I was very pleased with their practices. They manufacture all their products to a super-high standard! They are organic. Gluten-free. Vegan. Free of chemicals, fillers, stabilizers, etc. I don’t recommend anything that I wouldn’t put in my body myself! My hesitation in trying this cleanse was that I don’t have much weight to lose!! (I know..if only you could have that same ‘problem’!) I eat lots of veggies & fruits, organic. Healthy fats and lean, organic protein. I drink lots of water. I exercise pretty regularly. But I decided to give the cleanse a try anyway! I can stand to gain more lean muscle and if I lose a little more ‘fat’ I’m cool.

Today was Day 1. And it wasn’t completely easy. I had a networking breakfast this morning at 7am. There were hard boiled eggs and bagels with cream cheese (which I would never touch!) but I stayed true to the cleanse. I only had tea and then I went home to drink my Power Shake, which was yummy!! I took my Amino Acids. I was a good girl - until lunch! My friend was having a yummy baby spinach salad with jerked chicken and I couldn’t resist. I had a few bites of the salad. But I mean a few - maybe 4 - no more than 5 bites. I could’ve ‘cheated’ with something unhealthy but I went with salad and a very small amount of it. It’s the chicken that did me in! The baby spinach is on my ok-list, so long as it’s organic.

Going forward, I am determined to stick to my cleanse (plus a couple of the pre-approved foods on my list) for the remaining (little over) 9 days! I want to see how lean I can get and the only way to see the results is to stick with the cleanse! I’m excited!! Maybe I’ll even get the beginnings of a 6-pack.

Some good reasons to do a high quality cleanse?

  1. To break your addiction to processed foods & sugar

  2. To cleanse your body (from all the toxins and chemicals, etc)

  3. To improve digestion

  4. To improve your lifestyle

  5. and in the case of this particular cleanse - To lose weight, sustainably

It’s time to stop counting calories. Stop listening to the latest fad dietary advice. Pay attention to the chemicals and sugar you are putting your body. Learn what’s best for your body’s nourishment needs. Go for real nutrition and your body will be the picture of fitness and health! I’ll keep y’all posted on my progress!  If you have any questions, feel free to ask and if you're up for the cleanse - use the gift card code: BERADIANT

Health starts in your Gut

There are lots of factors that play a role in losing weight and keeping it off. One of them has to do with the friendly bacteria in your gut! These microscopic guys are essential for proper digestion and the assimilation of nutrients. When we eat highly processed, nutritionally deficient and chemically-laden foods we destroy the environment in our digestive system! And we gain weight, find it hard to lose weight and feel groggy, tired and irritable. A healthy gut also helps keep our skin clear and glow-y. I have seen this time and again with myself and my clients. For myself, when I slack on my daily probiotic regimen I start getting irregular, bloated and my skin starts to look less vibrant. That’s when I know I have to get right back on the proverbial horse! And I do. Health and wellbeing is process and your daily health regimen is what makes it happen.

Some benefits of daily probiotic use:

  • Boosts your immune system (and wards off infections)

  • Improves women’s vaginal health - like the gut bacteria, balance is key to the health of our lady parts.

  • Improves gastrointestinal health - a healthy balance of gut bacteria is essential for the proper breakdown and absorption of the foods we eat. Healthy gut bacteria can also help with IBS, cramps, bloating, diarrhea, etc.

  • Maintains urinary tract health

  • Obesity - yes that too! Preliminary research has shown that probiotics can help obese people maintain weight loss after weight loss surgery and Stanford researchers have found that obese people have different gut bacteria than normal weight people.

What to look for?? You want high CFUs (Colony Forming Units) because this tells you how rich in probiotics a food actually is, unpasteurized or fermented foods.

Unpasteurized probiotic-rich foods:

  • Kefir

  • Miso

  • Tempeh

  • Blue Algae (can be bought refrigerated and you can add it to your morning smoothies)

  • Kimchi

  • Kombucha Tea

  • Sauerkraut - make sure this is raw, organic

  • Pickles - again, raw & organic

  • Plain, unflavored, organic yogurt

  • Fresh, refrigerated probiotic supplements

When buying probiotic food products make sure you read your ingredient labels! Make sure that the sugar and fat content is within reason. 4 grams = 1 teaspoon of sugar. Look for it to be organic too! You don’t want your healthy probiotics to be laced with toxins. Kinda defeats the purpose no?? I do my best to take 1 high quality probiotic supplement, drink 1 organic goat milk kefir  and/or 1 raw kombucha tea every day. I notice that when I do at least 2 of these my tummy is happy (and not bloated) and my skin looks great! Every system in your body is interrelated and interconnected so help your body out and nourish it with high quality foods!

So Many Reasons...to Use RAW Apple Cider Vinegar

I’ve been hearing about the myriad of benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for awhile now but only recently have I started really paying attention and experimenting with it in my day to day. I have to say I really like the benefits!

Oh, before I get into it, just be sure that your Apple Cider Vinegar is RAW. Your bottle has to contain the ‘mother of the vinegar’ which is what gives the healing properties to ACV. So remember, RAW and “mother of the vinegar”. If it is clear, filtered, processed it loses its healing properties!

Back to the healing properties! Did you know you can use it to make your hair shiny, clear up acne and soothe a sunburn?? I knew the hair thing but not the other two! These are just a few of the benefits. I use it as mouthwash pre-brushing to kill off bacteria and whiten my chompers. This will loosen up any mucus in your sinuses which is awesome!! Because it helps relieve allergies and keeps sinus infections away (which I used to get several times a year!!). I sip it in purified water to keep my body’s pH balanced - this increases my energy levels and protects me from illness - and to keep my waistline trim - especially now that bikini season is upon us!

Some Benefits of ACV?

  • Aid in weight-loss - studies have shown that the acetic acid, found in raw ACV, reduces abdominal fat, inches around your waist, weight and triglycerides (which contribute to bad cholesterol).

  • Boosts energy by balancing your body’s pH levels - when your body is too acidic (lower pH levels) it can be more prone to infections and a variety of illnesses and have low energy levels which ACV helps reverse. Raw ACV helps the body maintain a healthy alkaline environment.

  • Useful in Detoxification - Raw ACV helps break up mucus throughout the body (which can help with allergies, sinus congestion and even sinus infections), helps stimulate cardiovascular circulation and detoxify your liver.

  • Relieving arthritis pain - the potassium in ACV works to prevent calcium build-up in your joints, which has been linked to joint stiffness.

  • Improve bone health - ACV is rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium and other minerals which are for maintaining your bones.

  • Whiter Teeth - ACV helps remove stains, kills bacteria in your mouth and along the gumline. Just gargle with it in the morning and then brush your teeth as usual.

How to use ACV??

You can add Raw Apple Cider Vinegar to your salads, or your salad dressing, even in your smoothies! Be sure to check out my recipe for a great fat burning drink using ACV.

  • For helping alkalinize your body, weight loss and maintenance you can add 1 tablespoon of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, before your meals.

  • For treating acute conditions like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, sore throat you can add 2 tablespoons of Raw ACV in 8 oz of water 3x/day, after your meals

Fat Burning & Detoxifying Drink

16 oz purified water

2 tbsp Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, organic (**make sure it is RAW and has the ‘mother of the vinegar’ in it**)

½ organic lemon, squeezed (can use 1 whole lemon)

1 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon, ground

1 tsp raw honey (optional)

Mix with a spoon and drink to your health!

Why Eat Greens??

There is tons of information out there about the importance of eating Greens. Dark Leafy Green Veggies. Green Cruciferous Veggies. Green vegetables are crucial for body’s health and wellness. Essential for a beautiful complexion and for strong hair and nails. Green veggies also help your body shed excess pounds and maintain it! They are filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals your body needs to be healthy and fight off disease!

Here is what Greens do for your body:

  1. Their Fiber is very important for weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight! And it can also help lower cholesterol, blood pressure and helps keep your blood sugar levels stable.

  2. The High Water Content are essential for keeping your body hydrated and contributing to beautiful skin and hair.

  3. Rich in Calcium and Potassium that helps maintain strong teeth and bones, reducing the risk for osteoporosis and helps manage blood pressure levels.

  4. Their Anti-oxidants, Vitamin C, Lutein & Zeaxanthin, help reduce risk of cataracts and keep your eyes healthy. The vitamin C helps your body produce collagen which in turn keeps your skin and hair beautiful.

  5. They contain Beta-carotene which supports the growth and repair of your body’s tissues. Your body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A as needed so it is safer to eat your greens than to take supplements.

  6. They’re an excellent source of Folate which help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and memory loss and it supports the production of serotonin which can help protect you against depression and contribute to healthy moods.

  7. The Vitamin E in green leafy veggies help maintain healthy skin and may help protect your eyes from degeneration.

The great thing about Greens is that you can eat as much of them as you want! I’ve never heard of anyone getting fat from eating kale and swiss chard, have you? I know that whenever I feel as if I’ve gained a little weight I increase my green intake and the inches come off. Not only do I lose inches with more greens but my complexion and hair start looking even better! As if I needed more reasons to eat my greens! I’m definitely sold on the beauty benefits of greens! Make half your plate Green! Try it for yourself and enjoy a more beautiful complexion and a healthier body!

Burn Fat with Cinnamon

It’s Springtime, finally!!! And I am seeing a lot of people hitting the gym in preparation for bikini season. I am slightly amused because they could’ve been ahead of the curve if they stayed true to their New Years’ Resolutions but alas, we are a culture that is obsessed with instant gratification. The thing is that things don’t change overnight. No matter what the TV or the movies say change is something that develops over time. Whether it is change in our bodies or in our health it is consistency that matters the most. I learned this the hard way over the past several years. Fad diets don’t work. Starving myself doesn’t work. Surgery doesn’t work. The results are unsustainable, at best, because there I don’t change my day to day habits!

Now that I am wiser I aim for four things:

  1. Fat loss over weight loss

  2. Nutrient-rich foods - what makes up a calorie matters, NOT just the calorie

  3. Regular Exercise - for the endorphins and the fabulous, fit looking body

  4. 90/10 Rule - Eat healthy foods 90% of the time, leaving room for the occasional treat

Everyone knows that Green Tea encourages fat loss and improves physical performance, which is why it is one of my favorite things to drink. But not everyone knows about cinnamon! To change it up I started drinking a tea made from a cinnamon stick and dried goji berries. Goji berries have tons of anti-oxidants and have a long history of being a longevity-promoting and beautifying food. But cinnamon is also very impressive.

Some top benefits of Cinnamon are:

  1. Boosting brain function

  2. Preventing fat storage, especially in the belly

  3. Anti-microbial properties, which makes it great for fighting colds and flus

  4. Helps control blood sugar level

  5. Rich in Manganese, Iron, Calcium and Fiber

  6. Improves circulation, which helps aid digestion

Cinnamon you had me at preventing fat storage!! I am enjoying this tea daily and I sprinkle ½ teaspoon of cinnamon on my chia pudding or in my coffee as well!

The type of cinnamon you want to buy is Ceylon Cinnamon. You can find it at Whole Foods or your neighborhood health market or on Amazon. Frontier Natural Products is the company that I buy my cinnamon from. Ceylon cinnamon is preferred over the more common Cassia, because it has less coumarin, which is better for the liver, tastes better and is sustainably grown.

Melt butter in pan & brown the chicken thighs over medium-high heat (~2-3 minutes per side). Transfer to chicken to plate. Start cooking the onions over medium heat (~2-3 minutes). When they are half translucent, add the garlic, and cook for another 2 minutes. Add the parsley & the cilantro, cooking for ~3 minutes. Toss in the dried apricots & cook for ~1 minute.
